Study group

A study group is a student-formed working group inside an MBA. Unlike a learning team, nobody in the dean’s office picked the names. People cluster by friendship, function, or who can stand a 10 p.m. spreadsheet.

Informal groups do a lot of the real learning. They also recreate the old office the school tried to break up.

How it works

Four finance people meet every Sunday. They crush valuation problem sets and then sit mute in marketing cases. A mixed group that formed at orientation survives into electives if someone bothers to schedule it. Neither group is on the transcript.

AMBA counts supervised peer-to-peer learning toward contact in some designs. A pizza-and-slides Sunday is not that, unless faculty structured it.

Example: two groups prep the same case. Group A divides pages. Group B argues the decision for 40 minutes and then divides exhibits. Group B’s members survive a cold call. Group A produces a neat summary and a silent room.

How it differs

A learning team is assigned and graded as a unit in some courses. A capstone team is assigned at the end. A club case team is extra-curricular. The study group is the unofficial one.

Common errors

Abandoning the assigned team for a comfortable study group and then failing the team process grade. Turning the group into a division-of-labor machine that leaves everyone unprepared.

Free-rider problems show up faster here than in assigned teams because nobody is grading the group. Write a simple rule on week one: who prepares exhibits, who opens the case, what time you stop. Groups that run past midnight produce tired cold calls. Ending at 10 with everyone able to speak the decision is the actual academic product.
