STEM designation

Also called STEM MBA · STEM OPT MBA

A program can market itself as a "STEM MBA" only if the registrar puts a listed CIP on the I-20. The letters MBA do not do that work.

STEM designation in the MBA market is a US immigration fact, not an academic honor. An F-1 graduate whose degree sits on the Department of Homeland Security STEM list can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension after the usual 12-month post-completion OPT. The list is a set of Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes, not a set of diploma titles.

A program can market itself as a “STEM MBA” only if the registrar puts a listed CIP on the I-20. The letters MBA do not do that work.

How it works

DHS treats engineering (14), biological sciences (26), mathematics (27), and physical sciences (40) as core STEM families, plus related codes it adds to the published list. A generic MBA is often coded 52.0201 (Business Administration and Management), which is not on the STEM list. Some schools register an analytics-heavy MBA or concentration under 52.1301 (Management Science) or 30.7102 (Business Analytics), which can be.

Eligibility follows the six-digit code on the I-20, not the brochure. Two students in the same building can hold different codes if one is in a STEM track and one is in the general MBA.

Example: Student A is in a general MBA, CIP 52.0201, and gets 12 months of OPT. Student B is in the same school’s analytics MBA, CIP 52.1301, and can apply for the extra 24 months if the employer and Form I-983 requirements are met. B did not become more “quantitative” by slogan. B got a different code.

How it differs

AACSB accreditation is a quality review. STEM designation is a DHS list membership. A specialized MBA is not automatically STEM-coded. Online students have additional practical constraints on OPT that a CIP code will not fix by itself.

Common errors

Trusting the marketing page instead of the I-20. Assuming every analytics elective converts a 52.0201 MBA into STEM. Treating STEM designation as a ranking.
