Learning team

A learning team is the small group a school assigns, usually in the first term, to work through the core curriculum together. Four to six people. Mixed backgrounds on purpose. You do not pick them.

This is the unit that meets the night before a case method class and splits problem sets. It is also the first place MBA conflict shows up.

How it works

The school builds teams from the cohort using some mix of nationality, function, gender, and quantitative background. The pedagogical claim is that you should not spend year one recreating your old office. The practical claim is that someone in the room can read a cash-flow statement and someone else can run the room when the modeler freezes.

Teams dissolve or loosen when electives start. Some schools keep them for a required project. Informal study groups form on top and are not the same object.

Example: a team of five has two consultants, one engineer, one brand manager, and one army officer. The consultants start to write every deck. By week four the engineer has not spoken in the case prep. A cold call lands on the engineer. The team’s unofficial process has just become that person’s grade problem. A functioning team rotates who opens the case.

How it differs

A study group is student-formed and can be four finance people who like each other. A section is 60–90 people. A capstone team may be newly assigned at the end of the degree. Club case teams are extra-curricular.

Common errors

Doing the other person’s work to keep the peace. Meeting for three hours to divide up a two-page case. Treating the assigned team as optional because you already have friends.
