Scores were collected from Quacquarelli Symonds, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, and U.S. News and World Report placed on a 100-point scale and then averaged to find the Stacked Score. Every top MBA in Finance program has a prestigious MBA brand and comes from the top business schools from around the country.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology – Cambridge, Massachusetts

At the Sloan School of Management within the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MBA students may choose to pursue the finance track. This track is part of the full-time, two-year, on-campus MBA program at MIT. Students on the finance track ground their education in financial theory, are exposed to financial institutes and practices, and receive an overview of professional opportunities in the financial field.

In addition to the core coursework, like the Introduction to the Practice of Finance, Managerial Finance, and Corporate Finance, MBA finance students also take at least one Action Learning course. In their Action Learning course, students work with an external client to solve a current, real-world business problem. There are four Action Learning courses to choose from, including Proseminar in Capital Markets, Proseminar in Corporate Finance, Finance Lab, and Fintech Ventures.

As part of the full-time MBA program, students graduate with a certificate in finance along with their MBA degree.

The Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles, offers both a specialization and a certificate in finance for its full-time, on-campus MBA program. In this two-year program, MBA students may choose to specialize in corporate finance through the Fink Center for Finance. Students in this specialization take courses such as Behavioral Finance, Corporate Valuation, Risk Management, Takeovers, Restructuring, and Corporate Governance.

UCLA also offers a Fully-Employed MBA program. This is a 27-month program that gives students the option to specialize in finance, again through the Fink School of Finance. Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business offers both a Daytime MBA and an Accelerated Daytime MBA program. Both programs offer several different concentrations in the realm of Finance – Energy Finance, Financial Analysis/Accounting, FinTech (Financial Technology), and Finance. Within the Finance concentration, students may choose to narrow their focus down even further between Corporate Finance, Investment Finance, and Dual (Corporate and Investment).

At the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago, MBA students may choose between the Full-Time MBA, Evening MBA, Weekend MBA. The Full-Time MBA is a 21-month, on-campus format with one internship or other qualified work experience component. Meanwhile, the Evening and Weekend MBA programs are both part-time programs that take two and a half to three years to complete.

For all three programs, most students earn between three and four concentrations, among which they might choose a concentration in Analytic Finance or Finance, in addition to eleven other concentration offerings. For all three programs, regardless of the concentrations a student chooses, there are also options to take courses in Financial Accounting and a number of other Finance-based courses as part of the core curriculum.

Students enrolled in the 22-month Global Executive MBA program take classes at each campus during international session week – campuses being in Chicago, London, and Hong Kong. Students may choose a focused area of study in Corporate Finance.

Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management offers three MBA programs. The Full-Time MBA has several options to choose from, including the One-Year MBA and the Two-Year MBA programs. For those who aren’t ready or able to commit to a full-time program, Northwestern also has an Evening & Weekend MBA program. All programs take place on campus in Evanston or Chicago. Additionally, for experienced professionals, there is an Executive MBA program, which students may choose from either the Miami, FL or Evanston, IL campuses for classes.

While MBA students are not required to choose a major, the Full-Time MBA options and the Evening & Weekend MBA Program have seven majors to select from, including Finance. The Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University gives its MBA students options to pursue their degrees with both on-campus and hybrid programs. The Full-Time program is an on-campus program that takes two years to complete. Meanwhile, the Flexible MBA is a part-time program that students can complete in just under three years. Students in the Flexible MBA may choose to take classes online, on-campus in Baltimore, or a combination of the two. With its flexible format, this MBA program is designed for working professionals.

The Flexible MBA offers specializations in eight areas, including Financial Management. This specialization provides a broad foundation in the finance field and provides students with practical tools to be strong financial managers, balancing the theory and the practical technical aspects. There are two required courses – Investments and Financial Modeling & Valuation – followed by a wide variety of finance-based electives for students to choose from.

There are five MBA programs at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business. The Full-Time program is a two-year residential program. But those who need more flexibility can take the three-year online or two-year weekend MBA programs. The Weekend Program requires campus visits once a month. There are also Executive and Global MBA Programs as well.

The Full-Time MBA offers a Fast-Track in Finance specialization. This selective specialization is particularly designed for students looking for careers in business development, consulting, and technology. Students in the FTF can start their finance electives as soon as they begin their MBA program in tandem with the core curriculum. In order to participate in the FTF specialization, students need to first complete an online summer program. They also get to participate in the management of one of Ross’ student funds and lead a business through a Living Business Leadership Experience as two examples of how students engage in the Action-Based Learning for the FTF specialization.

In the second year of the Weekend MBA program, students can choose themed electives in Financial Management as well.

Rice University – Houston, Texas

The Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University offers a number of MBA programs -from full- or part-time, hybrid, on-campus, or online, professional or executive – there’s something for everyone.

The Full-Time MBA program offers finance as one of its concentration options. This concentration gives its students a solid financial management foundation and space to build on this foundation with further specialization of specifically finance courses. The Full-Time MBA is a two-year program with courses held on Rice’s campus. Most students in this program have two to eight years of professional experience.

The STEM EMBA and PMBA programs allow students to customize their program in the third semester, with a wide selection of finance courses to choose from for those who are interested in deepening their Finance expertise. This is another two-year, on-campus program, but classes are set up to allow for working professionals to be able to attend, with classes on Fridays and Saturdays, for example.

For those interested in online programs, MBA@Rice offers seven focus areas, including one in Corporate Finance. This two-year program does have some residential components.

New York University – New York, New York

At New York University, the Leonard N. Stern School of Business has four MBA programs: a Full-Time MBA, a Part-Time MBA, an Executive MBA, and a Tech MBA, as well as a few dual degree programs and a Fashion & Luxury MBA.

The Part-Time MBA offers a variety of formats, from weekends to weeknights to an online hybrid option, and takes two to six years to complete. Finance is one of a number of specializations that MBA students may choose from. The Finance Specialization is made up of just three Finance courses from courses like Foundations of Fintech and Investor Relations Strategy, as a few examples.

The two-year Full-Time MBA is an on-campus program, and Finance is one of the program’s Areas of Interest students may pursue. Within this interest area, students may specialize in any number of options, including Finance, Financial Instruments and Markets, Financial Systems and Analytics, FinTech, and Qualitative Finance. Whether you need part-time or full-time, online or in-person, the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University has a number of STEM MBA program options. The Full-Time MBA requires on-campus classes and is a 21-month program. But the 32-month Part-Time Online, the 24-month Part-Time Accelerated, and the 32-month Part-Time Flex are either fully online or offer the flexibility of formats, depending on students’ needs.

Students within this program are required to complete at least one concentration, though most earn three or even four. A concentration is automatic as soon as a student takes three or more electives in a subject area, of which Finance is one option, regardless of which format of MBA program a student is pursuing. This concentration includes classes like Corporate Finance, Investment Analysis, and Venture Capital and Private Equity.

Vanderbilt University – Nashville, Tennessee

Vanderbilt University offers two MBA programs at the Owen Graduate School of Management – their MBA program and their Executive MBA program. The EMBA is formatted for working professionals, but the MBA program is a traditional on-campus format.

For those looking to pursue a finance-focused career, the MBA program can be customized with a STEM-certified Finance concentration and a specialization in Corporate Finance. The concentration requires at least 12 credit hours beyond the core curriculum, while the specialization is earned with 20 credit hours beyond the core curriculum.

MBA students may also participate in the Max Adler Student Investment Fund (MASIF) or the TVA Investment Challenge Program as part of their Immersion Learning at Vanderbilt. They also have the option of competing at the National MBA Human Capital Case Competition, among other case competitions. Both the funds and case competitions are excellent opportunities for MBA students to build their finance stacks by expanding beyond classroom learning.

Washington University in St. Louis – Saint Louis, Missouri

The Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis provides opportunities for students to pursue both a Full-Time MBA and an Executive MBA. The Full-Time MBA is an on-campus STEM program, and students may choose from among five career platforms, including the option of a career platform in Finance. The concentrations are beyond coursework and include alumni networking, job search support, and student clubs like the Olin Finance Club. Coursework for the Finance platform is made up of 15.5 credits – eight from foundation courses, three from experiential learning, and 4.5 from concentration credits.

For those students for whom the traditional Full-Time MBA program isn’t a good fit for them, Olin also offers an Online MBA program. This is a year-round, 30-month program that is 100 percent online and does not require any on-campus residencies. While there is no specific finance focus in this program, Finance is one of the program’s Functional Areas of Business.

Emory University’s Goizueta Business School provides on-campus MBA programs in full- and part-time formats, as well as an Executive MBA program. Full-time MBA students earn their degree in just 12 months with the one-year track, but for those who want to take a bit more time, they also offer a two-year program. Regardless of the duration of the program, the Full-Time MBA has over 20 concentrations for students to choose from, including Corporate Finance, Capital Markets, Alternative Investments, Investment Banking, and Global Financial Reporting Analysis, for those interested in a finance track of study.

EMBA students can take up to three electives in three years from the Evening and Full-Time MBA programs, which include a number of Finance-specific courses, like Advanced Corporate Finance, Alternative Investments, and Finance Markets. The EMBA program can also be taken in a hybrid format and an online format, in addition to on-campus. This is an 18-month program.

Emory also offers a Part-Time Evening MBA for working professionals. This program takes an average of 32 months to complete but can be completed in as little as 24 months. Like the Full-Time MBA program, there are 20 concentrations offered, including Corporate Finance, Capital Markets, and Managerial Finance.

At the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on-campus MBA program options include a Full-Time MBA and several Executive MBAs – Evening, Weekend, and based on the Charlotte campus – which are all hybrid formats. There is also an Online MBA Program. Depending on which program a student chooses, the duration ranges from a year and a half to two years to earn a degree.

For the Full-Time MBA, there are a number of Career Concentrations to choose from, including Capital Markets and Investments, as well as Corporate Finance. These concentrations are closely linked to hiring needs, preparing students with the knowledge, experience, and skills for their chosen field upon graduation.

Finance is also a concentration for Evening MBA, Weekend EMBA students, and the Online MBA programs and is made up of coursework like Managerial Accounting, Taxes, and Financial Statement Analysis.

University of California, Davis – Davis, California

MBA students in the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Davis may choose from the Full-Time MBA program or the Online MBA program. The Full-Time MBA is a two-year, on-campus program. Students in this program have the option to pursue a self-guided concentration in a number of areas, including Finance/Accounting.

In addition to the Full-Time MBA program on the UC Davis campus, there is also a Part-Time MBA program offered in a hybrid of online and at the Bay Area camps, which offers the same self-guided concentration options as the Full-Time MBA. This is a 24- to 48-month program.

While the Online MBA program has the same number of credits as the other MBA programs and is taught by the same faculty, there is no self-guided concentration available in this format. However, there the core coursework has a financial component one would expect in an MBA program, such as Financial Accounting and Financial Theory. Online MBA students can round out their classes with electives in Corporate Finance or Business Taxation, as examples, to help build out their finance stack.

The University of Florida’s Warrington College of Business has four MBA programs to select from – Full-Time, Executive, Weekend Professional, and Online MBA Programs. The Full-Time MBA offers both a one- and two-year track. The one-year track is a 12-month program for those who do not already have a business major, but for those who did a business undergraduate program, that time can be decreased to just ten months.

The Full-Time MBA program has over 100 elective classes and seven concentrations for students to choose from, including a Finance concentration. To earn their concentration, students must complete five elective Finance courses, which are intended to help prepare students for careers in asset management, corporate finance, financial management, managing financial institutions, as well as investment banking.

Concentrations are only available for the Full-Time MBA program. However, for those students enrolled in the other MBA programs, whether on campus or online, there is the option to select a Focus Area in Finance to help them enroll in electives that align with their career goals.

MBA students at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin may enroll in the Full-Time MBA Program, Evening MBA Program, or the Executive MBA Program.

Though they are not required, Full-Time MBA students may choose to earn one of 20 possible concentrations, so they may delve more deeply into a particular functional area or industry. Of those 20 concentrations, there are six Finance concentrations to choose from, including General Finance, Corporate Finance, Energy Finance, Private Equity, Investment Management, and Real Estate Finance, all of which are STEM-certified.

Full-Time MBA students will also gain experience working on micro-consulting projects with a team of classmates for the McCombs+ projects, applying what they learned in the classroom to problems faced by real businesses and organizations.

The EMBA and Evening MBA programs do not have concentrations available but do integrate finance into the required coursework.

The Full-Time MBA program at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business is a two-year, on-campus program. Students enrolled in this top program may choose to earn as many concentrations as they would like. Among the Career Track Concentration options are Corporate Finance/Investment Banking and Asset Management/Sales & Trading. Also, beginning at the end of their first year, students can enroll in Area Focused Electives in Finance with classes in Corporate Finance, Small Enterprises, Sales and Trading, Investments/Portfolio Management, and Investment Banking.

Darden also offers an Executive MBA program. During the elective period in the EMBA, students may select from seven focus areas, including Finance. The EMBA is done in a hybrid format with synchronous weeknight classes online, weekend classes on campus, a residency to start the program, and one weeklong global residency.

The Simon Business School at the University of Rochester offers both a Full-Time MBA program with on-campus classes and an Executive MBA program that follows a hybrid format.

The Full-Time MBA is set up with four career tracks in Finance, Consulting, Marketing, and General Management. Within these tracks, students take specialized courses, participate in co-curricular opportunities and career-building projects, and can select from 10 minors. For those in the Finance track, the courses include asset management, banking, brand management, and venture capital, as a few examples. University of Notre Dame – Notre Dame, Indiana

The University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business offers a two-year Executive MBA on its Chicago campus and both a One-Year MBA and Two-Year MBA on its main campus outside of South Bend, Indiana. Both the One-Year and Two-Year MBA Programs are full-time, with the One-Year Program offering an accelerated format.

There are nine majors to choose from with both the One-Year and Two-Year MBA Programs, including Corporate Finance and Investments as finance-focused options, both of which are STEM-designated majors. The Corporate Finance major gives students the skills to help their organizations find the money to run and grow while planning for their financial futures. The Investments major is for those students who are interested in investment banking or investment management.

Students in both the One- and Two-Year MBA Programs also have the opportunity to participate in 10-day immersion trips each spring to either South Africa or a country in Asia or South America.

Georgia Institute of Technology – Atlanta, Georgia

The Georgia Institute of Technology offers three MBA programs through its Scheller College of Business. Students can choose from the two-year Full-Time MBA, the part-time Evening MBA, which takes 24 to 36 months to complete, or the 17-month Executive MBA, which meets on Fridays and Saturdays. All three of these programs are held on Georgia Institute of Technology’s Atlanta campus.

For the Full-Time MBA and the Evening MBA, students must choose one official concentration and four elective courses. One concentration option is in finance. This concentration focuses on corporate finance specifically, and students learn skills like financial modeling, issues in debt and equity, financial planning, and risk management.

With the EMBA, students choose between a Global Business Specialization and a Management Technology Specialization. In the Global Business Specialization, students take courses that focus on a global business perspective, including International Finance. There is also a global residency component to the program.

Case Western Reserve University – Cleveland, Ohio

The Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University has both on-campus and online MBA program options. For those students for whom an on-campus program is the best fit, Weatherhead offers a Full-Time MBA program and an Executive MBA program.

The Full-Time MBA program is a 60-credit program that can be completed in two years. Students choose one concentration area, which is made up of four courses, which contribute to a total of nine elective courses. Of the concentrations offered, Finance is one of the options. The Finance concentration can also lead to a STEM MBA degree for those with strong quantitative skills.

Case Western also offers an Online Full-Time MBA program. While there are no concentrations to choose from as there are with the traditional MBA program on campus, Financial Management is an important part of the core coursework in this eight-semester program.

The University of Wisconsin, Madison’s Wisconsin School of Business offers both a Full-Time and an Executive MBA program as on-campus options. The Full-Time MBA Program offers a number of specializations, including Corporate Finance and Investment Banking specialization, which provides students with first-hand experience and technical skills to make sound, ethical financial decisions. This is a two-year program with a summer internship and a global learning opportunity.

For those who need the flexibility of an online program, UW Madison also offers their Professional MBA. The Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland has two on-campus options for its MBA students and one online program as well. For traditional, on-campus programs, MBA students can enroll in either the Full-Time MBA or the Executive MBA program.

The Full-Time MBA is a two-year program. Students may choose to focus their 24 electives in a particular specialization, such as in finance. The Finance specialization is broken up between Banking specialization courses and Corporate Finance specialization courses. There is also the Experiential Elective called the Mayer Fund, which is a highly selective asset management experience where a team of students works on meeting the Fund’s long-term performance goal.

The online option at UMD, College Park, also offers a specialization in Finance that particularly focuses on corporate finance, financial restructuring, and investing.

Northeastern University – Boston, Massachusetts

At Northeastern University, MBA students have their choice between the Full-Time MBA and the Part-Time MBA program at the D’Amore-McKim School of Business. The Full-Time MBA is a two-year program, while the Part-Time MBA takes, on average, three years to complete, though students have two to seven years to earn their degree. Classes are held in the evening for this part-time program. Both programs are held on Northeastern’s Boston campus.

For both programs, students must complete two concentrations, of which Corporate Finance and Investments are two options. For each concentration, there are one to three core classes, and then students have the choice of relevant elective options.

Northeastern also offers an Online MBA. This program is 100 percent online and designed for working professionals. Students can earn their degree in as little as two years and also have the option of earning dual degrees in the Online Master of Science in Finance/MBA program. There are eight concentrations for the Online MBA, including Finance.

Degree

If you’ve determined that an MBA with a Finance concentration is the career direction you want to head in, check to see if the programs you are interested in require the GMAT for admission. While the tide is turning away from standardized testing for MBA programs, the GMAT is still a widely held requirement for many, and it’s good to spend some time studying for it.

There are a number of programs you can check out to help make test prep easier and help you feel better prepared to take the test. Or, if standardized tests aren’t your cup of tea, consider a program that no longer requires the GMAT for admission. 

An MBA with a Finance concentration provides a greater depth of study for those interested in going into the financial field or continuing to build their talent stack as a working professional. A typical MBA with a Finance concentration will include courses that focus on corporate investment management, investments, portfolio management, small business and corporate finance, international finance, and fundraising, as a few examples.

Within these classes, you’ll find typical coursework to include projects that delve into macro- and microeconomics, financial modeling, real estate investing, private equity and stock market projects or consulting work, investment strategy, and entrepreneurial mergers and acquisitions.
