AMBA is the Association of MBAs, a London-based body that accredits MBA programs (and some DBA and specialist business master’s programs). Unlike AACSB and EQUIS, the unit of review is the program portfolio, not the whole school.

AMBA sells itself as a filter on the MBA as a post-experience, generalist degree. The public line is that it accredits programs from roughly the top 2% of business schools. Treat that as marketing density, then read the criteria.

How it works

A school puts its MBA portfolio forward. AMBA does not like one flagship that meets the rules and a cheap evening clone that does not. Eligibility notes used in joint AMBA/BGA materials include: at least three years of graduating MBA students, a faculty roster where about half hold doctorates, admitted students with at least three years of relevant postgraduate work, and a learning group of at least 20.

The load numbers are specific. An accredited MBA should represent at least 1,800 hours of learning effort and at least 500 contact hours with faculty. Heavily online delivery is allowed, but AMBA still wants at least 120 synchronous hours. Duration is expected to look like one year full-time or about 18–36 months part-time, with a hard outer bound near seven years.

Example: a US two-year MBA that admits a slice of students straight from undergraduate study can be excellent and still fail AMBA’s work-experience floor. A European one-year MBA with a class average of six years’ work, 520 contact hours, and a cohort of 40 may pass AMBA and never appear in U.S. News. The badge answers a different question than a US ranking.

How it differs

AACSB accredits the school and will cover undergraduate business degrees AMBA does not touch. EQUIS is also institutional and leans on internationalization and corporate connections. Holding all three is triple accreditation.

Common errors

Reading AMBA as a global ranking. Assuming every MBA on an AMBA-accredited campus is covered if the school quietly launched a new online section. Treating the 2% line as a quality score.
