A capstone is the integrative project that closes an MBA. A team takes a live or simulated problem, applies the core, and delivers a recommendation the school can grade. It is coursework with a client-shaped ending, not a master’s thesis.

Schools also call it an integrative exercise, a practicum, or a field project. If it is required to graduate, it is a capstone whatever the catalog name.

How it works

Typical timing is the last term. Teams of four or five draw a client — a company, a nonprofit, a founder’s deck — or a canned simulation. Faculty coach. The deliverable is a deck, a paper, and a presentation. Hours are real: a 3-credit capstone can eat a second-year calendar the same way a consulting case team does.

Some programs replace the capstone with an MBA thesis. Most US two-year MBAs do not. AMBA-style designs want integration; they do not all want a research dissertation.

Example: a four-person team is assigned a regional hospital that wants a new ambulatory site. They build a demand model, a staffing plan, and a five-year cash view, then present to the COO. The grade is on the analysis and on whether the team survived its own process. One member disappearing into recruiting in week six is a capstone failure mode the syllabus rarely prices.

How it differs

Experiential learning is the broader family; the capstone is the required close. Action learning is live project pedagogy that can run earlier. A case exam is a timed packet, not a client.

Common errors

Treating the capstone as optional résumé decoration. Picking a vanity client with no data. Letting recruiting absorb the teammate who owned the model.
