Pre-term

Pre-term is the short required block some MBA programs run before the official first week: quantitative camp, accounting primer, language of cases, software workshops. Yale SOM’s bulletin lists required pre-term work next to orientation. Other schools call it math camp and pretend it is optional until it is not.

It exists because incoming classes are mixed on purpose. Some people last saw a derivative ten years ago. Some people write models for a living.

How it works

The school assigns diagnostics in the summer. Students who fail the threshold sit a one- or two-week workshop in August. Attendance can be required for registration. A core waiver later in the year is a different process; surviving pre-term does not skip corporate finance.

Pre-term is also social. Learning teams sometimes form here. Recruiting talk starts here whether career services is ready or not.

Example: a diagnostic flags algebra and probability. You fly in ten days early, sit four hours of class plus problem sets, and pass an exit quiz. A classmate with a CFA skips the quiz and still has to show up for the case-workshop day. Different deficits, same calendar.

How it differs

Orientation is onboarding and community. Pre-term is coursework. A MOOC the school recommends in May is optional prep, not pre-term, unless the catalog says required.

Common errors

Skipping a “recommended” camp that the registrar treats as required. Using pre-term as a vacation week. Assuming a strong GMAT Quant score automatically waives it.

Housing and visas lag the academic invite. A pre-term that starts ten days before orientation can require an earlier move-in than the housing portal allows. International students who cannot enter until orientation week then miss a required workshop. Ask international student services whether pre-term is waivable for late arrivals or whether it delays registration.
