Core waiver

Also called course waiver · core exemption

A core waiver is permission to skip a required MBA course because you already know it. The school replaces the credits with an elective, or simply shortens the load. It is an exam or a credential review, not a vibe.

Waivers are how some accelerated MBA tracks exist. They are also how finance undergraduates disappear from financial accounting and then discover they cannot talk to their learning team.

How it works

Typical evidence: a recent undergraduate course with a high grade, a professional credential (CPA, CFA Level I+), or a waiver exam in August. Policies name which cores can be waived. Strategy and leadership courses almost never are. Accounting, statistics, and microeconomics often are.

Passing pre-term is not a waiver. Pre-term gets you ready for the core. The waiver gets you out of it.

Example: you hold CFA Level II and a 3.9 in undergraduate corporate finance. The school lets you waive the core finance course and frees three credits for a PE elective. You still sit marketing and operations. A classmate waives accounting on a stale 2014 syllabus and then drowns in the elective valuation course that assumed the core.

How it differs

Transfer credits from another graduate program are a different paperwork path. A specialized MBA that never offered the course is not a waiver; it is a missing core.

Common errors

Waiving too much and losing the shared language of the cohort. Assuming a business minor waives four cores. Forgetting that some schools require a replacement elective so the credit total stays whole.
