Placement rate

Placement rate is the share of MBA graduates in a defined group who have accepted (or sometimes received) a job by a defined date. The definition is the whole fight. Without the denominator and the date, the percentage is marketing.

CSEA wants offices to report seekers separately from the class. U.S. News has used employment at graduation and at three months as ranking inputs. Those are placement-flavored numbers with their own footnotes.

How it is measured

A defensible version:

Placement = accepted jobs by date ÷ graduates seeking employment

Offer rate is a cousin: offers ÷ seekers, including people who hold an offer they have not accepted. Schools sometimes blur the two.

Information thresholds matter. CSEA’s full-time standard has long wanted reliable information on about 85% of the class. A 98% placement rate built on 60% response is a rumor.

Example: 80 seekers, 72 accepted by three months, 4 with outstanding offers, 4 still looking. Acceptance placement is 72/80 = 90%. Offer rate is 76/80 = 95%. A slide that says “95% placed” used the offer numerator. Ask.

How it differs

First destination is the job itself. Placement rate is the ratio. FT “employed at three months” is one small line in a different ranking. Do not import it into a CSEA table.

Common errors

Dividing by the whole class. Mixing offers and acceptances. Ignoring “no information.” Comparing graduation-day rates with three-month rates.

Permanent versus non-permanent work authorization splits change the rate in US reports. A school can place 95% of authorized seekers and 70% of those without authorization. Blending those into one number hides the visa story. U.S. News inputs have used both graduation-day and three-month checkpoints; those two dates are not interchangeable in a comparison spreadsheet.
