Career services

Also called career management center · CMC · MBA career office

The Financial Times even scores "career services" as an alumni-survey criterion. That score is not a promise that the office will get you a particular desk.

Career services is the office that runs MBA recruiting infrastructure and publishes the employment report. Names vary: career management center, professional development, MBA career office. The job is the same. Employers need a calendar. Students need coaching. Rankings need a number.

The Financial Times even scores “career services” as an alumni-survey criterion. That score is not a promise that the office will get you a particular desk.

How it works

Before school starts, the office collects résumés, runs a resume book, and teaches case and behavioral drills. During term it administers on-campus recruiting, enforces offer policies, and tracks who has accepted what. After graduation it chases the class for CSEA-compliant data. Full-time reports want information on about 85% of the class. Missing students make the office look worse and make the placement rate less trustworthy.

Coaching quality is uneven by function. An office that sees 80 consulting-bound students a year is good at consulting. The same office may have one person covering media, climate, and sports.

Example: a student targeting a mid-size industrial firm will get less packaged support than a classmate targeting a firm that hires 20 people from the class every year. The office can still open a door. It will not run a 40-slot interview schedule that does not exist.

How it differs

Alumni networks help off-list. Faculty make introductions in their industry. Career services owns the official pipeline and the official statistics. Club leadership is not a substitute office.

Common errors

Never meeting the function advisor until March. Treating the employment report as the office’s gift to marketing rather than a dataset you should audit. Assuming part-time students get the same OCR machine.
