Online MBA

Also called distance MBA · remote MBA

An online MBA is an MBA delivered primarily over the network rather than in a weekday campus classroom. The credential on the diploma is usually still Master of Business Administration. The difference is the room.

“Online” is a delivery mode, not a lighter degree class. Weak programs exist in every mode. The useful questions are credit hours, synchronous time, faculty who also teach the residential MBA, and whether employers in your target market treat the transcript as the same degree.

How it works

Students watch or join sessions from wherever they can keep a job. Some programs are almost asynchronous: recorded lectures, discussion boards, periodic live seminars. Others require weekly live sessions that function like an evening MBA without the commute. AMBA’s criteria put a number on the interaction problem. Total learning effort still needs to look like 1,800 hours. Contact hours are still expected to reach 500. For heavily digital delivery, AMBA looks for at least 120 synchronous hours — live faculty-to-group time, not a pile of videos.

Recruiting access is the operational split. Two-year residential pipelines still run through campus. An online student who wants consulting in the US has to build that search off-cycle. An online student whose employer is paying, or who wants a promotion in place, does not need that pipeline.

Example: Program A is a 48-credit online MBA taught by the same faculty as the campus MBA, with a two-week residency and weekly live sections. Program B is a 30-credit fully asynchronous MBA with a separate adjunct roster and no residency. Both say “online MBA.” Only one will satisfy an AMBA-style contact-hour story or a corporate policy that requires the school’s AACSB unit and a shared faculty. Price is not the tell. Faculty roster and hours are.

How it differs

A hybrid MBA advertises a planned mix of campus days and remote days. A part-time MBA may be on campus every Tuesday night and still not be online. A full-time program that put recordings on a portal during a storm is not an online MBA.

Common errors

Assuming “online” means unaccredited or unofficial. Assuming it means the same on-campus recruiting hall. Comparing per-credit price without counting residencies, proctoring fees, and the hours you will actually be live on camera.
