A one-year MBA is a full-time MBA compressed into about 12 months of calendar time. It is common in Europe and in some US “accelerated” tracks. The diploma is still an MBA if the school is a real degree-granting institution. The missing object is usually the summer.

Two-year US programs use that summer for the MBA internship. One-year calendars run through the summer or start in the winter and never open an eight-week employer window. That single design choice changes recruiting, opportunity cost, and who the program is for.

How it works

The school still has to cover a general-management core and some electives. AMBA’s rules still want the equivalent of at least one year of full-time study and at least 1,800 hours of learning effort. Compression comes from shorter breaks, heavier weekly load, and fewer elective credits, not from deleting accounting.

Students who already know their post-MBA function — returning to a sponsor, staying in the same industry, moving inside a European market that hires off-cycle — can use the saved year. Career switchers who need a US banking or consulting internship are buying the wrong calendar unless the school runs an explicit alternative path.

Example: a two-year US MBA costs $160,000 net tuition and 21 months out of a $100,000 job. A one-year European MBA costs $90,000 tuition and 12 months out of the same job. Opportunity cost drops by roughly $80,000–$100,000 before tax. The intern-to-offer machine is gone. If the target job is a London industry role that hires in the spring, the one-year calendar can still work. If the target is a US summer-associate seat, it usually does not.

How it differs

An accelerated MBA is the broader label; some accelerated programs are 15–18 months rather than 12. A two-year full-time MBA is not “slower learning.” It is a different labor-market product. An executive MBA can also finish near 18 months while the student keeps the job.

Common errors

Treating 12 months as half the work. Comparing sticker tuition only. Assuming every one-year program meets AMBA’s hour floor.
