Part-time MBA

A part-time MBA is an MBA scheduled so the student can keep a full-time job. Courses land on weeknights, weekends, or a mix. The diploma usually says Master of Business Administration, not “part-time MBA.”

Schools also sell this product as a professional MBA or a fully employed MBA. Those labels describe the audience and the calendar. They are not a separate degree class. AMBA’s criteria treat part-time study as typically 18 to 36 months, with an outer limit around seven years if a school must set one.

How it works

The student takes a reduced load — often one or two courses a term — and stretches a 30- to 60-credit curriculum across more calendar years than a residential classmate. Cores still come first at many schools, but lockstep cohort structure is looser than in a two-year day program. People drop a term, switch sections, or finish electives after a job change.

The economic bet is the opposite of the full-time MBA. Tuition is still real. Forgone salary is not, unless the student cuts hours. Employer sponsorship shows up more often here: a company pays some or all tuition in exchange for a stay-back clause. Career switching is harder. On-campus recruiting calendars are built for people who can interview on a Tuesday at 10 a.m. and fly to a superday. Evening students use the office they already have, an internal move, or a quieter off-cycle search.

Example: a 48-credit program priced at $1,800 per credit costs $86,400. The student takes six credits a semester, three semesters a year, and finishes in about 2.7 years. They keep a $110,000 job. Compared with leaving that job for a two-year residential program, they avoid roughly two years of lost pay. They also miss the summer internship machine and most weekday club leadership.

How it differs

An executive MBA is also compatible with a job, but it selects for more years in management and uses multi-day modules rather than a standing Tuesday-night section. An online MBA may be part-time in load and still not require campus nights. A professional MBA brand that meets on weekends is this format with a marketing name.

Common errors

Assuming part-time means easier. Assuming the same employers will run the same internship process after hours. Treating “professional MBA” as a different credential on a résumé.
