A merit scholarship is money the business school itself puts on an MBA admit to discount cost of attendance. It is not a federal grant. It is not automatically need-based. Schools use it to shape the class and to protect yield against peer offers.
Some letters say “fellowship.” If the only distinction is the name on the award, treat it as merit aid. Named fellowships with extra programming are a tighter object.
How it works
Committees attach a dollar figure to an offer, sometimes at decision release, sometimes later as a matching tool. Earlier application rounds usually see more of the budget. R3 can still produce a large award if the school is short a profile it wants.
The award may be renewable if you stay in good standing, or split across two years, or front-loaded. Read the letter for tax treatment, work requirements, and whether the number is tuition-only. A $40,000 scholarship on a $116,000 COA does not pay rent unless the letter says “unrestricted.”
Example: School A admits you with $20,000 a year. School B admits you with $0, then matches $15,000 after you forward A’s letter. Net COA at A is still lower. B is using aid as a yield weapon, not as a verdict that you became a different applicant in March.
How it differs
Need-based aid uses a family or personal financial form. Employer sponsorship is a third-party payment with strings. A tuition waiver for employees of the university is a policy, not a merit competition. Yellow Ribbon is a VA match, not merit.
Common errors
Waiting for R3 “when they need people” and finding the budget gone. Assuming every school matches. Putting the award on a résumé.
