An MBA fellowship is a named award that bundles money with a label — and sometimes with extra programming, a service expectation, or a donor report. Many letters use “fellowship” as a synonym for merit scholarship. Some fellowships are tighter: Forté Fellow, Consortium Fellow, a donor-named seat in health care.

Ask what is cash and what is calendar.

How it works

The school attaches the name at admission or after a separate essay. Cash may cover tuition only or a stipend. Programming may include a weekend, a research project, or meetings with a donor. Service clauses exist: work in a lab, mentor undergraduates, stay in a sector.

Consortium and Forté fellowships travel with those organizations’ events. A donor fellowship may be quieter and easier to hold.

Example: “Smith Fellow — $20,000 per year, plus the Smith Leadership Dinner and a two-page donor note.” The dinner is two evenings. The note is an hour. The $20,000 is the award. A fellowship that requires 10 hours a week in a center is a part-time job with a scholarship attached. Price the hours.

How it differs

Merit scholarship is generic school money. Employer sponsorship is company money. Yellow Ribbon is a VA match. A research assistantship is employment.

Common errors

Putting the fellowship name above the degree on a résumé. Missing a service clause. Assuming “fellow” means full ride.

Tax treatment is local. A stipend paid as a paycheck is wages. A tuition credit may never hit your bank account and still reduce what you can borrow. Named fellowships sometimes require a separate thank-you or a donor lunch each year; missing those can void year-two funding. Put renewal conditions in the same folder as the admit letter.
