Business school

A business school is the faculty, college, or stand-alone institution that delivers management degrees, including the MBA. People say b-school. The legal name might be School of Management, Faculty of Business, or College of Business.

The MBA is a degree. The business school is the unit that teaches it, hires faculty, and sits in an accreditor’s directory.

How it works

Some schools are free-standing (a named institute that grants degrees). Many are a unit inside a university that holds regional accreditation in the US. AACSB and EQUIS review that unit, not every department on campus. AMBA reviews programs the unit runs.

This structure is why “the university is accredited” and “the business school is AACSB-accredited” are different sentences. It is also why an MBA offered by an extension arm may not sit in the same directory entry as the flagship school.

Example: University X is regionally accredited. Its College of Business is AACSB-accredited and runs the two-year MBA. Its online continuing-education unit sells a separately staffed “MBA-style” program that is not in the AACSB scope. The catalog art looks similar. The directory entry does not.

How it differs

A university is the parent. An MBA is the degree. A department of economics may sit outside the business school and still teach a core. Rankings usually attach to the school’s full-time MBA, not to every credential the building sells.

Common errors

Reading university accreditation as business-school accreditation. Assuming every program on the website shares the school’s AACSB scope. Using “b-school” to mean only M7 campuses.
