MBA thesis

An MBA thesis is a substantial written research project some programs require instead of, or beside, a capstone. It looks like a short dissertation: question, literature or framework, data, findings. Most US two-year MBAs do not require one. Some European, African, and specialized programs do.

If the catalog says “independent study” worth a large credit block, read the rubric. That is often a thesis by another name.

How it works

A supervisor approves a question. The student spends a term (or two) collecting evidence — interviews, a survey, a company data room — and writes 8,000 to 20,000 words. Oral defense happens at some schools and not others.

This close fits students who need a written sample for a later PhD or a policy job. It is a poor fit for students whose recruiting calendar already ate March.

Example: a 15-credit independent-study block in a 220-credit-equivalent qualification sits next to taught modules. The student writes on pricing in a local mobile-money market, using a firm’s anonymized transactions. That is a thesis. A 20-page capstone deck for the same firm is not.

How it differs

A capstone is applied and usually a team deck. A thesis is individual and written. A specialized master’s in research is a different degree. AMBA still wants an applied, generalist MBA; a thesis does not turn the MBA into an MPhil by itself.

Common errors

Picking a thesis topic in week twelve. Treating a thesis requirement as optional because US friends did a capstone. Pasting consulting slides into a research document.

Supervisor supply is the bottleneck. A rule that ‘everyone writes a thesis’ with eight available faculty is how topics get assigned in week ten. Ask how many theses were actually completed last year and how many students switched to a capstone. Word-count rules without a data plan produce literature reviews that help nobody.
