Not seeking employment

Not seeking employment is the CSEA status for MBA graduates who are not in the job market at reporting time. The bucket is supposed to hold company-sponsored students, founders, people continuing their education, people postponing a search, and a thin “other” line.

It is not a synonym for unemployed. Unemployed-and-looking belongs under seeking employment.

How it is measured

The office asks each graduate. Stanford’s 2024 report is unusually explicit: 12% sponsored, 23% starting a business, 4% continuing education, 1% postponing, 3% other, plus a sliver with no information. Add those and you get a class where 42% were never in the seeker denominator.

Founder-heavy classes look “worse” on placement-among-all-graduates and normal on placement-among-seekers. That is composition.

Example: School A is 20% founders and 10% sponsored. School B is 5% combined not-seeking. Both place 90% of seekers. A’s all-class “employed” figure will look weaker if someone sloppy dumps founders into the unemployed pile. They were not looking.

How it differs

“No recent information” is missing data, not not-seeking. A sponsored student who breaks a contract late may need a reclassification the report will not reopen.

Common errors

Calling not-seeking a failure. Using it to hide unemployment by recoding seekers. Comparing two schools’ all-class employment without this split.

Founder counts inflate this bucket at some schools and should be read as a product choice. A program that celebrates start-ups will show a lower seeker share and a perfectly healthy seeker placement rate. Company-sponsored shares do the same in EMBA-heavy reports. When a slide hides the split, ask for the raw CSEA table. Other and postponing rows should stay small; if they grow, the office is parking people who are actually looking.
