Deferred MBA

A deferred MBA is an admission to a future full-time MBA class offered while the applicant is still an undergraduate or a very early-career worker. The student gets the yes now, works for two to four years, and then matriculates. Harvard’s 2+2 is the version people use as shorthand. Other schools run their own named paths.

It is an admit with a mandatory delay, not a scholarship by itself.

How it works

The applicant applies in the senior year (or shortly after) through a special process that still wants essays, recommendations, and usually a test. The school is betting on raw academic signal and a plan for the work years. Those work years are the point. US two-year programs that take deferred students are using the delay to manufacture the work experience AMBA-style programs would have demanded at entry.

Between admit and start, the student has to stay in touch, sometimes file annual updates, and not treat the offer as portable to a different school. Some offers include a summer pre-MBA program. Scholarships may or may not be locked; read the letter.

Example: a senior is admitted in April 2026 to the MBA class entering August 2029. The letter requires 36 months of full-time work and an annual update. In 2028 the student is at a consulting firm and wants to start a year early. That is a new request, not a right. A classmate who takes a drifting series of short jobs may find the school less eager to honor the seat.

How it differs

A deferral is a delay granted after a normal admit, usually for one year, for a job, visa, or medical reason. Deferred MBA is a product for people who are not ready to start. Early-decision undergraduate admission is a different industry.

Common errors

Treating the offer as a backup while ignoring the work-plan the essay promised. Assuming every top US school runs a deferred path. Counting the wait years as optional.
