Work experience

Also called professional experience · years of experience

Internships during college usually do not count toward the year total. Military service and founding a company do, if the school can see outcomes.

Work experience in MBA admissions is the full-time work an applicant has done after the undergraduate degree. Committees count years, but they read quality: scope, progression, and whether anyone reported to you or trusted you with a budget.

Internships during college usually do not count toward the year total. Military service and founding a company do, if the school can see outcomes.

How it works

US two-year programs often have no hard floor. They publish a class profile median around four to six years and still admit a tail with two. AMBA-accredited programs are built as post-experience degrees: at least three years of relevant work at the start, with a class average closer to five. That is why some strong US schools never seek AMBA.

Years are not seniority. Five years as an individual contributor is not five years as an executive MBA candidate. EMBA rooms want people who already manage managers or P&Ls. A deferred MBA admit is the opposite bet: almost no experience now, with a plan to grow it before matriculation.

Example: Applicant A has 3.0 years at a consulting firm, two promotions, and a case team of three. Applicant B has 6.0 years in the same first analyst seat. A looks lighter on the year count and heavier on progression. B needs the essay to explain the stall. Counting only B’s “6 years” is how applicants fool themselves.

How it differs

A résumé is the evidence. The year count is a summary statistic. Career switcher identity is about direction, not years. Volunteer leadership can support a story; it does not replace employment unless the school says so.

Common errors

Inflating internships into years. Treating military years as hard to explain instead of as management. Applying to an AMBA program with 18 months of work and hoping the test score covers it.
