Dual-degree MBA

A dual-degree MBA is a structured pair of credentials in which one is the MBA and the other is a separate degree — JD, MD, MPP, MPH, MS in engineering — finished on a coordinated calendar. The student applies to both programs, or to a named dual track, and shares some credits so the pair takes less time than the two degrees in series.

Two diplomas is the test. A concentration printed on an MBA transcript is not a dual degree.

How it works

The MBA still needs a general-management core. The second school still needs its own required sequence. Shared credits are the negotiation: a health-care MBA elective might count toward an MPH, or a public-policy analysis course might count as an MBA elective. Total time often lands at three or four years instead of four or five.

Admissions can be joint or sequential. Some dual tracks want one application. Some want two complete files and will let you start the MBA only after the law school admits you. Scholarships rarely scale linearly. An MBA fellowship does not automatically cover the JD year.

Example: a 2+2 JD/MBA is advertised as four years instead of five. Year one is law. Years two and three mix MBA core and remaining law. Year four is law clinics and an MBA elective. Tuition is four years of sticker, not two. The summer after year two may be a law firm, not an MBA internship. Recruiting calendars collide. Students who treat the dual as “two networks for the price of one” discover they have two recruiting offices and one calendar.

How it differs

A joint degree may print one diploma with two fields or share a tighter curriculum; naming varies by registrar. A specialized MBA is one degree with a branded spike. A second master’s started after the MBA is just two degrees, not a dual program.

Common errors

Adding sticker prices without counting shared credits. Assuming both career offices will treat you as a first-priority candidate in the same month. Using “dual MBA” to mean two concentrations.
