Experiential learning

Experiential learning in an MBA is credit-bearing work on a live or simulated problem, as opposed to a lecture or a closed case packet. The student has to produce something a client, a judge, or a model will react to.

Schools use the phrase as a bucket. Inside it sit field projects, capstones, action learning labs, global immersions, and sometimes the MBA internship. The internship is employment. The rest are courses.

How it works

A well-run project has a scope letter, a faculty coach, a client who will actually show up, and a grade tied to analysis plus process. A poorly run project is unpaid consulting with no data room and a thank-you reception.

Hours compete with recruiting. That is the design tension in two-year US programs: the same months that sell “experiential” are the months consulting firms run case interviews. Students who treat every lab as optional décor drop the one that would have given them a work sample in the new function.

Example: an analytics lab pairs four students with a mid-market retailer for ten weeks. The useful output is a demand model the merchant team can rerun. The useless output is a 40-slide deck of generic “insights.” Recruiters in data roles will ask to see the model, not the deck.

How it differs

The case method uses a finished packet. Experiential work uses a living problem. A guest speaker is not experiential learning. A club trek is experiential in the colloquial sense and usually not for credit.

Common errors

Counting every site visit as a pedagogy. Letting the client change the brief every week with no faculty brake. Confusing internship employment with a course project on a résumé.
