Application fee

An application fee is the amount a school charges to accept an MBA file. Yale SOM’s bulletin has published a tiered $125–$250 range. Other schools sit below or above that. The fee is small next to tuition and large next to a ten-school list.

It is also a completeness switch. An unpaid file is not in the application round.

How it works

You pay in the application portal. Fee waivers exist for military applicants, consortium members, current volunteers in named programs, or anyone who asks early with a short hardship note. Asking the day of the deadline is how you miss the deadline.

Some schools tier the fee by round or by need. A higher R1 fee is not a quality signal. It is a price.

Example: ten full-time applications at $200 is $2,000 before tests and transcript charges. Cutting the list to six schools you would actually attend saves $800 and four essays. The fee is doing useful rationing if you let it.

How it differs

A deposit after admission is a yield tool, not an application fee. Test registration is a GMAC or ETS charge. Credential-evaluation fees are a third invoice.

Common errors

Submitting at 11:58 p.m. and discovering the card declined. Treating a waiver denial as a comment on the file. Paying a second fee to “update” a submitted file when the school just wanted an email.

Fee waivers have calendars. Consortium applicants, active-duty military, and current Peace Corps or AmeriCorps members often have a published path. Need-based waivers want a short note before you hit submit, not a panic email at 11 p.m. Some schools also waive for recruiting-event attendees. Stacking ten full-price applications is a $2,000 decision you should make after the school list, not before.
