Resume book

A resume book is the packet of MBA student résumés career services sends to employers who recruit the class. It can be a PDF, a searchable portal, or both. Employers skim it before they decide whom to coffee chat and whom to put on an interview list.

If you are not in the book the firm received, you are not in that first skim.

How it works

Students upload a one-page résumé to a school template. The office may run a pass for typos and banned graphics. Deadlines are real. Miss the book deadline and you can still apply later; you missed the passive channel.

Some books are function-sliced: a finance book, a marketing book. Opting into every book so you “keep options open” puts a confused page in front of every recruiter.

Example: a consulting firm downloads the consulting book on 12 September. Your corrected résumé hits the portal on 15 September. The first-round list is already internally short. You are now an off-book email.

How it differs

LinkedIn is public and messy. A personal email with a PDF is targeted. The book is the official bulk channel. OCR interview lists can be built from the book plus bids plus chats.

Common errors

A two-page résumé in a one-page book. Function-hopping headlines. Forgetting the book exists and investing only in coffee chats.

Template fights are worth having once. A school template that kills white space can also stop 200 students from sending 200 designs. Do not fight the template in week two. Fight a wrong function headline. Update the book when your target changes; an old ‘seeking consulting’ header in a marketing book is how you get skipped by both sides.
