M7

Also called Magic Seven · M-7

It is not a ranking methodology.

M7 is informal shorthand for seven US business schools people treat as a top cluster: Harvard, Stanford GSB, Wharton, Chicago Booth, Columbia, MIT Sloan, and Northwestern Kellogg. Nobody elected this set. No accreditor maintains it. Consultants and applicants use it as a filing label.

It is not a ranking methodology.

How it works

The list is stable because peer prestige is sticky and because those seven keep showing up near the top of U.S. News MBA ranking tables. Membership fights break out when a school just outside the seven has a stronger year on Financial Times or in one industry pipeline.

Treating “M7 or nothing” as a strategy collapses different classrooms, costs, and recruiting maps into one nickname. Sloan and Harvard are not interchangeable products. They share a neighborhood in other people’s heads.

Example: an applicant applies only to the seven, gets one waitlist, and calls the cycle a failure. A T15 school that dominates their target function was never on the list because it was not in the nickname. The nickname did the damage.

How it differs

U.S. News and FT publish methods. T15 is a looser informal ring around the same idea. Triple accreditation is a real intersection of badges and includes schools nowhere near this US set.

Common errors

Putting “targeting M7” in an essay. Assuming the seven share one employment report. Using M7 as a quality function for part-time or EMBA programs those schools may not even run the same way.

Industry maps inside the seven are not identical. One school can dominate a consulting list while another dominates a tech-PM list. Employment reports, not the nickname, show that. Cost of attendance also varies by tens of thousands inside the same cluster. Treat M7 as a conversation shortcut, then open the CSEA tables.
