Undergraduate GPA

Undergraduate GPA is the grade-point average from the bachelor’s degree, the academic history line in an MBA file. Schools want transcripts from every college you attended, not just the degree-granting one.

It is a four-year (or three-year) story compressed into one number. Readers unpack it when the number is awkward.

How it is measured

US schools usually read an unweighted 4.0-scale GPA. International transcripts get converted by the school or by a credential evaluator. Some applicants try to submit a “major GPA” or “last 60 credits” as the headline. Put that in the optional essay if it changes the read. Do not replace the official number on the form.

U.S. News uses median undergraduate GPA as a selectivity input. That is why published class profiles cluster in a narrow band even when classrooms include people who started poorly and finished well.

Example: a 3.15 overall includes a 2.4 first year and a 3.6 last two years in engineering. The form still says 3.15. The optional box points at the trend and at later quantitative work. A 705 GMAT helps the academic-risk argument. It does not erase the 3.15.

How it differs

A graduate GPA is extra evidence, not a substitute. A test waiver sometimes leans on a high undergraduate GPA. High school grades do not belong in this file.

Common errors

Recalculating GPA on a private spreadsheet and using that number. Hiding a transfer transcript. Explaining a 3.8.

Grade inflation and scale differences make raw GPA a blunt tool across countries. Readers who see a lot of UK or Indian transcripts already know this and look at rank or first-class marks. US readers who do not see those files often will lean harder on the test. That is why the same 3.3 means different things in different rooms.
