Video essay

Also called video prompt · recorded assessment

A video essay is a timed, recorded spoken answer that some MBA programs add to the written file. The platform throws a prompt. You get a minute to think and one or two minutes to talk. You cannot call a friend.

A video essay is a timed, recorded spoken answer that some MBA programs add to the written file. The platform throws a prompt. You get a minute to think and one or two minutes to talk. You cannot call a friend.

Schools use it to hear how you sound when you cannot edit for three days. It is a cheap filter before they spend an alum on a live MBA interview.

How it works

Prompts are either known in advance (“Why this school?”) or unseen until the clock starts. Unseen prompts are usually behavioral or lightweight opinion questions, not valuation problems. The camera, microphone, and background are part of the artifact. A kitchen with a roommate shouting is a data point whether you want it to be or not.

Do not read a script on screen. Do not wing a school-specific answer you have not practiced. One clean take beats four takes that get weirder.

Example: the prompt is “Tell us about a time you disagreed with a manager.” A usable 90 seconds names the disagreement, the number that was at stake, what you did, and what changed. A wasted 90 seconds restates the MBA essay about long-term goals.

How it differs

A live interview can follow up. A video essay cannot. A written essay can be edited. An interview invite is a later gate; some schools want the video even from people they will never invite.

Common errors

Using a filter that distorts your face. Overrunning the clock and getting cut mid-sentence. Treating the video as optional because the button sits at the bottom of the form.
