The QS MBA ranking is Quacquarelli Symonds’ global list of MBA programs. It leans on employer reputation, academic reputation, and international metrics more than a US first-destination spreadsheet. Weights move. Check the edition you are citing.
It is useful as a brand map outside the United States. It is a weak tool for choosing between two US schools that both place into the same domestic desk.
How it works
QS surveys employers and academics and mixes those reputation scores with data on class mix, thought leadership, and return on investment as QS defines it. Schools that travel well as brands — names a hiring manager in another country recognizes — tend to do better than regional workhorses with quiet peer scores.
That is a feature if you want to work across borders. It is noise if you want a Chicago middle-market PE seat.
Example: a European school sits top-20 on QS and 40-something on U.S. News (or is absent there because it is not a US campus program). An applicant targeting London should take QS seriously. An applicant targeting US OCR for consulting should take CSEA reports and the US list more seriously.
How it differs
FT uses three-year alumni pay as a large weight. U.S. News is US-campus and peer-heavy. Bloomberg is experience-survey-heavy. QS is the brand-and-employer global cousin.
Common errors
Using QS to settle a two-school US decision. Assuming QS ROI matches your spreadsheet. Treating QS stars or badges as accreditation.
Employer-reputation surveys overweight brands hiring managers already know. That helps global mobility and hurts specialized regional programs. QS also publishes subject and business-master lists that people mix with the MBA table. Confirm you are reading the Global MBA ranking, not a Masters in Management list, before you tell anyone a school ‘fell 12 places.’
