A global MBA is an MBA whose design requires study in more than one country or on more than one campus, not just a week-long trip. The word is marketing-heavy. Some schools slap it on any program with an optional immersion. The operational test is whether you have to change cities to finish the required path.
How it works
Serious versions rotate the cohort through two or three sites, or split the class across partner campuses and reconvene for modules. Faculty may travel with the cohort or hand the module to the host school. Tuition is usually billed by one institution. Housing, visas, and tax residency become part of the curriculum whether the syllabus says so or not.
A global immersion is a short required or elective trip inside an otherwise single-campus MBA. An exchange program sends one student, not the cohort. A joint degree may add a second diploma. None of those is automatically a global MBA.
Example: a 17-month program spends five months in London, five in New York, and a final module in Hong Kong. The same 40 students move together. Recruiting is fragmented: London finance in the first autumn, New York tech in the spring, no single on-campus hall. A classmate in a two-year US program will have a cleaner on-campus recruiting story and a weaker built-in multi-city network.
How it differs
International students in a US two-year MBA do not make that program a global MBA. An online MBA with students in 40 countries is geographically scattered and still one classroom. EQUIS cares about institutional internationalization; that badge does not make every program on the campus a global MBA.
Common errors
Paying a global premium for what is an optional week in a hotel. Ignoring visa lead times between modules. Assuming every employer treats a rotating campus as equivalent to a two-year US recruiting machine.
