English proficiency test

An English proficiency test is a TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, or similar exam some MBA programs require when the applicant’s prior degree was not taught in English. It is a language screen. It is not the GMAT verbal section and it is not the GRE.

Policies are local and change. Read the current admissions page, not a forum post from 2019.

How it works

Schools publish a minimum or a “competitive” range and list which tests they accept. Waivers usually need a degree taught in English from a named country list, or years of work in an English-majority office. A waiver for the GMAT is not a waiver for TOEFL.

Scores expire. Many schools want a test less than two years old even when the GMAT is valid for five. Send official reports. Screenshots die in a complete-file check.

Example: you have a 675 GMAT and an undergraduate degree taught in Spanish. The school wants TOEFL iBT 100 or IELTS 7.0. You have 96 and a great interview. The file can stall at the registrar even after AdCom likes you, because the language policy is a compliance line, not a vibe.

How it differs

GMAT Verbal measures reasoning in English for academic readiness. Proficiency tests measure whether you can function in an English classroom. AMBA cares that the entering group can actually study together.

Common errors

Assuming a US work visa means a TOEFL waiver. Letting a two-year-old IELTS expire between R1 and R2. Taking Duolingo because it is cheap at a school that does not accept it.
