Prerequisite

Also called prereq · MBA prerequisites · business prerequisites

The usual set is undergraduate accounting, statistics, microeconomics or macroeconomics, and sometimes calculus or spreadsheet-based finance. Some programs waive a course if the transcript already shows it with a minimum grade. Others run a short online module, a summer math camp, or a first-term core that assumes you already have the skill. Language proficiency is a separate requirement, not a business prerequisite, though both can be conditions of enrollment.

Prerequisite is coursework or a skill a school requires before an MBA student may enroll in a course, or before an offer becomes unconditional. GMAC’s GME Admissions Reporting Standards do not treat prerequisites as a funnel metric. Confirm the list on the school’s site; it often appears as a condition on an admit.

What do MBA prerequisites usually cover?

The usual set is undergraduate accounting, statistics, microeconomics or macroeconomics, and sometimes calculus or spreadsheet-based finance. Some programs waive a course if the transcript already shows it with a minimum grade. Others run a short online module, a summer math camp, or a first-term core that assumes you already have the skill. Language proficiency is a separate requirement, not a business prerequisite, though both can be conditions of enrollment.

mba.com’s application guide treats extra quantitative coursework as a repair for a weak undergraduate record: retake economics, calculus, or statistics, then point to the new grade. That is optional preparation when the school did not require it, and it is a prerequisite when the school did. The distinction is who blocks enrollment.

Example: a program requires a B or better in a three-credit statistics course. Your transcript shows “Intro to Stats, C+.” The committee can still admit you with a condition: complete an approved stats course by 1 August and send the official transcript. Until that grade lands, you have a conditional admit. If you skip the course and try to register in August, the registrar, not the essay, is the problem.

How is a prerequisite different from an admission requirement?

An admission requirement (complete application, fee, resume or transcript, sometimes a test) decides whether the file is reviewable. GMAC’s complete-application list is that set. A prerequisite decides whether you are ready for the curriculum after the offer. You can be admitted with a 3.5 GPA and still owe accounting. AMBA’s MBA criteria assume a graduate who can handle master’s-level work and, for the student body, substantial postgraduate work experience. They do not publish a universal accounting-course list.

Common errors

Confusing a recommended prep course with a hard prerequisite. Sending a certificate of attendance when the school asked for a graded transcript. Completing the course at a provider the school does not accept. Waiting until after orientation to start a six-week stats module.

FAQ

Do I need business-major courses to apply for an MBA?

Usually no. Most full-time MBAs admit any undergraduate major. Prerequisites, when they exist, are a short list of tools (stats, accounting) rather than a business degree. AMBA-accredited MBAs care more about postgraduate work experience than about an undergraduate business major.

Can I finish prerequisites after I am admitted?

Often yes, if the offer is conditional and names the course, grade, and deadline. The condition is part of the admit, not a waitlist. Miss the deadline and the school can withdraw the offer before matriculation. GMAC says a rescinded offer is not counted as an admit.

Does a high GMAT waive prerequisites?

Only if the school says so. A strong Quant score may persuade a committee you can handle the core, but registrars still follow the written prereq list. Ask admissions in writing whether a test score, a CFA level, or a prior finance job substitutes. Do not assume.
