Private university
Also called private college · private institution · independent university
One sticker for instructional charges, not a resident/nonresident pair. Discounts arrive as merit, named fellowships, and occasionally need grants, not as a domicile reclassification. Wharton’s 2026–27 MBA tuition is $87,970 plus university fees; that figure does not care which state issued your driver’s license.
Private university is an institution controlled by a private board or nongovernmental agency and funded mainly from tuition, gifts, and endowment rather than a state appropriation. IPEDS splits private control into nonprofit and for-profit. Confirm the Scorecard control code; “private” is not a quality mark (NCES IPEDS; VA private cap 2026–27).
What does private control change on the bill?
One sticker for instructional charges, not a resident/nonresident pair. Discounts arrive as merit, named fellowships, and occasionally need grants, not as a domicile reclassification. Post-9/11 GI Bill at a private institution of higher learning pays net tuition and mandatory fees up to $30,908.34 for August 1, 2026–July 31, 2027. Charges above that need Yellow Ribbon, other gift aid, or the student’s cash. Public in-state MBA tuition often sits under the Chapter 33 public rule (pay the net resident charge) and never hits that dollar cap.
College Scorecard builds a private net-price average (NPT4_PRIV) for first-time, full-time undergraduates at both nonprofit and for-profit privates. It is not an MBA net price.
How does private differ from public and from for-profit?
Public university is state governance plus a residency price. Private is board governance plus a single sticker. For-profit college is also private control, but owners may take residual profit. Nonprofit college is the 501(c)(3) (or similar) charitable form most brand-name private MBA programs use.
A private MBA can be cheaper than a public out-of-state MBA after merit. A public in-state MBA can undercut a private sticker before merit. Control is the starting rule for how price is published, not the ranking of the classroom.
Worked comparison
Private sticker $88,000, merit $30,000, billed $58,000. Public out-of-state sticker $84,000, no residency path, merit $10,000, billed $74,000. The private is cheaper for that student. Swap in a resident public rate of $40,000 and the ranking flips. Always specify residency before calling a sector “expensive.”
Common errors
- Using “private” as shorthand for “elite” or for “for-profit.”
- Comparing a private sticker to a public in-state sticker as if both were available to the same person.
- Reading Scorecard private net price as the MBA’s net tuition.
FAQ
Are all private MBA programs nonprofit?
No. Most well-known U.S. university-based MBAs are private nonprofit. Some standalone business schools are for-profit. Check CONTROL on Scorecard or the IRS exemption, not the adjective on a brochure.
Does a private school have in-state tuition?
Not as a state-residency rate. It may have other discounts that happen to go to local applicants.
Why does GI Bill treat private schools differently?
Statute. Publics: pay net in-state tuition and fees. Privates: a national dollar cap, then Yellow Ribbon.
