Transcript

Also called academic transcript · unofficial transcript · official transcript

GMAC's language is broad: a record of postsecondary educational pursuits, official or unofficial. That covers bachelor's work, later master's work, and often every college that issued credit, not only the diploma school. A degree diploma is a separate item. Some programs want the physical diploma from international schools when conferral is not printed on the transcript.

Transcript is the official or unofficial record of a candidate’s postsecondary coursework and grades. GMAC’s GME Admissions Reporting Standards treat transcripts as a required complete-application element unless the school accepts a resume or CV in their place. For review, many MBA programs take an upload. For matriculation, they usually want the registrar’s sealed or electronic original.

What counts as a transcript in MBA admissions?

GMAC’s language is broad: a record of postsecondary educational pursuits, official or unofficial. That covers bachelor’s work, later master’s work, and often every college that issued credit, not only the diploma school. A degree diploma is a separate item. Some programs want the physical diploma from international schools when conferral is not printed on the transcript.

Unofficial copies (student-portal PDFs, scans) are enough to start review at many schools. Official copies travel from the institution, a designated network, or an approved credential evaluator. Georgetown’s MBA onboarding language is typical: anything the applicant emails is unofficial; official status requires the school or testing agency as sender.

Example: you attended a community college for 30 credits, then a U.S. university that printed a cumulative 3.42 GPA on the bachelor’s transcript. GMAC class-profile GPA uses that 3.42 if it is on a 4.0 scale and printed as final cumulative GPA. The community-college grades stay in the file for review but do not get averaged into the reported class GPA. If the bachelor’s transcript omits a cumulative GPA, the 2026 standards forbid a school from manufacturing one by hand for reporting.

How do international transcripts get read?

Review and reporting are different jobs. For review, a school may read the original scale, ask for a NACES-member course-by-course evaluation, or both. WES will convert grades to a U.S. 4.0 and calls that opinion advisory, not binding. For GMAC class-profile reporting: U.S. 4.0 cumulative GPAs only, no conversions, and no 4.3 or 5.0 scales. An international 8.5/10 does not become a 3.7 in the published class GPA. A credential evaluation is not a transcript. Follow the school’s list.

Common errors

Uploading a degree certificate and calling it a transcript. Ordering a document-by-document WES report when the school asked for course-by-course. Assuming a student-issued PDF will satisfy matriculation. Omitting a transfer school because those credits appear as a lump on the diploma transcript.

FAQ

Do I need official transcripts to apply?

Often no. GMAC allows unofficial records for a complete application, and many MBA portals review scans. Official copies usually become a condition of the offer, due before you enroll. If the school says official-at-application, the file is incomplete without them and stays out of GMAC’s applicant count.

Which schools’ transcripts do I send?

Every postsecondary institution the program lists, commonly all of them, or at least the degree-granting school plus anywhere the last 60 credits were earned. Transfer credit on the diploma transcript does not always replace the original school’s record. When in doubt, send more rather than explain a missing registrar later.

Does a WES GPA replace my transcript GPA?

No. A course-by-course evaluation is a third-party reading of the same record. Schools may use it to interpret a foreign scale. GMAC’s class-profile GPA still excludes conversions. Do not substitute a WES number for the GPA printed on a U.S. 4.0 transcript.
