Resume

Resume (or CV) is the candidate’s own account of academic and professional achievements. GMAC’s GME Admissions Reporting Standards make a resume or a transcript required for a complete application; both may be required. Work-experience months in the class profile are taken from the application, resume, or CV.

What belongs on an MBA resume

Full-time roles after the undergraduate degree, with start and end months, employer, title, and results a recommender could confirm. Military service belongs here; GMAC counts it as work experience. Education sits with the degree, institution, and date, not with a reconstructed GPA the transcript does not print. Internships during college can appear in a separate block so they are not mistaken for full-time months.

U.S. MBA resumes are usually one page. That is a school convention, not a GMAC rule. Quantify. “Improved yield” is weaker than “cut scrap 12% on a $40 million line.” Career switchers should not relabel old jobs in the target industry’s jargon; the essay carries the switch, the resume carries the facts.

Example: 48 months at two employers, plus a six-month post-grad internship and two college internships. GMAC work experience is 48 months, or 54 if the post-grad internship was full-time. The resume can show all four experiences. The form’s “full-time months since undergraduate degree” field should match 48 or 54, not 72. Inflating college summers into six years of experience is how files get flagged.

Resume versus transcript, essay, and letter

The transcript is the school’s record of courses and grades. The resume is yours. GMAC lets a program require one or the other for completeness; most full-time MBAs want both. The required essay should not restate every bullet. The letter of recommendation should match the resume’s projects. If the recommender describes a launch that is not on the page, add it or expect a question in the interview.

Common errors

Using years only (“2019–2021”) so overlapping jobs cannot be checked. Listing “proficient in Excel” as if it were a role. A two-page consulting-firm bio with internal codes no outsider can read. GPA on the resume that does not match the transcript. Omitting a job you think looks junior, then having the recommender mention it.

FAQ

Is a resume required for every MBA application?+

GMAC says a complete file needs a transcript or a resume/CV, and many programs need both. Treat the resume as required unless the school says otherwise. An application that has a transcript but no resume may be complete under GMAC’s minimum and still be incomplete under the school’s own checklist.

Should I put GMAT and GPA on the resume?+

Only if the school wants them there. They already live on the test report and the transcript. A resume GPA that rounds 3.44 to 3.5, or a GMAT superscore the school will not use, creates a needless mismatch. Space is better spent on work results.

Does GMAC prefer resume or CV as the name?+

It uses “Resume/Curriculum vitae” and defines the object, not the label. Follow the school’s upload name. In U.S. full-time MBA portals, “resume” usually means a one-page reverse-chronology sheet. In some international programs, “CV” means the same document, not a multi-page academic CV.
