The Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) is a six-digit NCES taxonomy used for IPEDS reporting, Title IV program files, and SEVIS. When a designated school official creates an F-1 record, the major on Form I-20 is a CIP code and the CIP name, not the wording on the diploma. A school that prints "Master of Business Administration" may report CIP 52.0201 (Business Administration and Management, General), or a STEM-eligible code such as 52.1301 if the curriculum matches that listing. STEM OPT eligibility follows the CIP on the I-20, not the word "MBA" on the wall.
Diploma is the document an institution issues to name the degree it conferred: typically “Master of Business Administration” on MBA parchment. That title is not the CIP code on an I-20, not the program name in a federal gainful-employment file, and not a ranking. Two diplomas with the same wording can sit under different CIP codes.

Transcripts carry the conferral and the major as the registrar stores it. Employers and licensing boards usually ask for the accredited degree title. A “Global Leadership MBA” and a plain “MBA” can be one FVT program if they share CIP and level.
Example: Student T’s diploma says Master of Business Administration. The I-20 Major 1 is 52.1399. That CIP, if it is on the DHS STEM list, is what makes a 24-month STEM OPT extension possible. Changing the parchment wording without changing the CIP does nothing for OPT.
An unaccredited school can still print a diploma. The Department of Education warns that many employers, graduate schools, and licensing boards only recognize degrees from institutions accredited by an agency the Secretary recognizes. The paper is real; the recognition is not.
How does it differ from a certificate?
A diploma here means the degree credential. Executive certificates are different awards; they do not make the holder an MBA alumnus for directory purposes. Carnegie Classification labels the institution, not the line of type on the MBA parchment.
Common errors
- Treating the I-20 CIP as the degree title.
- Assuming any diploma that says MBA is Title IV-eligible.
- Using a ranking website to check whether the diploma will transfer.
- Confusing AACSB of the business school with institutional accreditation of the university that issues the diploma.
FAQ
Does the diploma list the CIP code?
Almost never. CIP is a reporting code. Ask the registrar or the DSO for the CIP if you need it for OPT, IPEDS, or FVT.
Can two concentrations share one diploma title and two CIPs?
Yes, if the school has mapped each track to a different CIP in IPEDS and SEVIS. The parchment may still say MBA. The I-20 and the federal program file will differ.
Will employers check accreditation or the ranking?
Hiring screens, when they check, look for a degree from an institution with a recognized institutional accreditor. They do not look up FT rank.
Is a foreign MBA diploma a U.S. CIP?
Foreign degrees do not get a U.S. CIP unless a U.S. school confers a dual award. SEVIS CIP applies to the U.S. program on the I-20.
