Modality

Modality is how the MBA is taught: in person, online, hybrid, or blended, live or asynchronous. It is delivery, not the diploma. AACSB 5.2 requires equivalent rigor when the same MBA is offered more than one way. CSEA wants a footnote if reports split by modality.

Is online a different MBA?+

Only if the school issues a different credential or houses it in a different unit. Same degree name, same unit, different modality: it is still that MBA for AACSB scope. A tuition policy that says “on-campus only” is a policy choice, not an accreditation rule. Check the directory entity and the diploma line.

CSEA’s part-time standards tell schools that if they report by modality they should write the rule down — for example 40 percent in person, 60 percent online. Without that footnote, “hybrid” in School A and “hybrid” in School B are not comparable placement rows.

Example: University A’s College of Business offers the same MBA on campus and online. AACSB covers both if both sit in programmatic scope. University B runs an online MBA from a professional-studies division outside the AACSB unit. Modality is not the difference. The unit is.

FAQ

Does AACSB accredit online MBAs?+

Yes, if the MBA is issued by the accredited unit and included in programmatic scope. AACSB does not have a separate “online stamp.” Equivalence of outcomes is the test.

Is hybrid the same as blended?+

Often in marketing. AMBA’s documents use blended/online and still want 120 synchronous hours inside 500 contact hours. Ask for the percentage and the live-hour count.

Why do employment reports split by modality?+

Because recruiting channels differ. CSEA lets schools split, then requires a definition. A combined table can hide that the online cohort never sat on-campus recruiting.
