Asynchronous
Also called async · asynchronous learning · asynchronous delivery
AMBA's 2022 split is the working rule for accredited programs. At least 120 hours must be synchronous. The rest of the 500 contact hours — 380 if you sit on the minimums — may be asynchronous, but criterion 3.23 says those hours should be mandatory interactive faculty-student group learning and mandatory interactive faculty-supervised peer-to-peer group learning. Faculty have to be in the loop. Peers have to be in the loop. You have to have to do it.
Asynchronous is instruction that does not require students and faculty to be present at the same moment. You post, watch, or submit on a deadline. They respond later. In an MBA it is a timing mode, not a license to skip the group. AMBA will count some asynchronous work as contact only when it is mandatory, interactive, and faculty-supported inside a learning group. Self-paced video alone is learning effort, not a contact hour.
What can count, and what cannot?

That rules out: optional discussion boards, recorded lectures with a quiz, one-to-one essay feedback, office hours you might attend. Those can still be part of the 1,800 hours of learning effort. They do not fill the 500.
U.S. federal distance-education rules add a second test for Title IV schools: regular and substantive interaction between students and instructors, synchronous or asynchronous. A correspondence course is not distance education. An MBA that ships a box of videos and a final exam has a federal problem as well as an AMBA problem.
Example: a 3-credit online course over 8 weeks. Each week: 90 minutes of live seminar (synchronous), two 30-minute cases the team must comment on by Thursday with faculty replies by Saturday (asynchronous contact), and 4 hours of reading (learning effort, not contact). Over 8 weeks: 12 live hours, 8 async contact hours, 32 reading hours. Scale that design across the degree and you can see whether 120 and 500 are plausible.
Asynchronous versus self-paced versus recorded
| Mode | Shared clock | Faculty in the interaction |
|---|---|---|
| Synchronous | Yes | Yes, live |
| Asynchronous contact | Deadline, not a clock | Yes, inside the group |
| Recorded / self-paced | No | Often no |
Common errors
Calling every online MBA asynchronous. Counting video runtime as contact hours. Treating Slack among teammates with no faculty as faculty-supervised peer learning. Advertising “learn on your own schedule” next to an AMBA logo.
FAQ
Can an AMBA MBA be fully asynchronous?
No. The synchronous minimum is 120 hours. Fully asynchronous is a different product.
Does a deadline make it contact?
No. A deadline makes it mandatory. Contact still needs faculty support and a learning group. A solo paper due Friday is mandatory learning effort.
Is asynchronous easier for working students?
It removes the live clock. It does not remove hours. A 1,800-hour degree still has 1,800 hours. The failure mode is students who believed “asynchronous” meant “lighter” and then hit three overlapping case deadlines on Thursday night.
Do discussion posts count?
They can, if everyone must post, faculty actually engage, and the activity is part of the required design. Drive-by comments on an optional board do not.
