Blended MBA

Also called blended learning MBA · blended-format MBA

A blended MBA mixes campus (or residential) time with online time in a planned pattern. It is a modality, not a separate degree. AMBA still wants 1,800 hours of learning effort, 500 contact hours, and 120 synchronous hours even when the MBA is blended or online. There is no legal blend percentage (AMBA 2022; CSEA).

Is blended different from hybrid?

In most U.S. catalogs, no. Schools use the words as synonyms. AMBA’s criteria talk about blended/online. CSEA talks about hybrid and tells you to footnote the mix. If a school uses both words, ask which percentage and which hours are live. The brochure word is not a standard.

A typical design is weekday asynchronous work plus four campus residencies a year. Those residencies are how many programs hit AMBA’s synchronous floor. An “all async, one orientation dinner” blend may still be an MBA. It may fail an AMBA contact-hour read.

Example: Program A, 48 credits, six long weekends on campus, rest live-online Tuesday nights. Program B, 48 credits, two campus days at start and end, rest recorded lectures. Both are sold as blended. Only A is likely to clear 120 synchronous hours. Employers who ask “is it AMBA?” are asking about B.

Common errors

  • Treating blended as a lighter MBA
  • Equating blended with asynchronous
  • Skipping AMBA hour floors because some of the program is online
  • Comparing two “blended” placement tables without the mix footnote

FAQ

Does a blended MBA count as online for state authorization?

Often yes, for the online pieces. NC-SARA and state rules follow where the student sits, not the brochure word. Residencies in another state can trigger extra authorization. Modality labels do not replace that map.

Will employers treat blended as equivalent?

Some will, if the diploma and the unit match the campus MBA. Some tuition policies still say “in person.” That is policy, not accreditation. The employment report, if split, tells you whether campus recruiting actually included the blended cohort.

Can I finish a blended MBA without ever visiting campus?

Only if the school designed it that way. Many “blended” programs require residencies and will not waive them. Read the residency clause before you count flights.
