Mini-MBA

A mini-MBA is almost never an MBA. It is usually a non-degree executive-education certificate, a short course series, or a continuing-education badge that borrows the letters. It does not meet AMBA’s 1,800-hour effort floor, does not confer a master’s, and does not inherit AACSB as an MBA because it is not that degree (AACSB 2020 standards; AMBA 2022).

Is a mini-MBA accredited?+

Not as an MBA. AACSB accredits the business school or unit and the degree programs in scope. A five-day “Mini-MBA” sold by the executive-education arm is not a master’s. Institutional accreditation of the university does not turn the certificate into Title IV-eligible graduate work. If a vendor with no campus uses the phrase, there may be no accreditation at all.

Some universities run a for-credit “mini” as a stack of graduate certificates that can later transfer into an MBA. That is advanced standing or transfer, not a finished MBA. Ask whether a diploma is issued, how many credits, and whether those credits sit inside the MBA.

Example: A public university’s exec-ed unit sells a 40-hour “Mini-MBA” for $2,495. The College of Business down the street holds AACSB and issues a 48-credit MBA. Putting “AACSB” on the 40-hour brochure is the error. The college’s mark does not travel with the certificate.

• Listing a mini-MBA as a master’s on a résumé
• Reading “offered by an AACSB school” as “this is an AACSB MBA”
• Using it to satisfy an HR policy that says “MBA required”
• Expecting federal graduate loans

FAQ

Can a mini-MBA transfer into a real MBA?+

Sometimes, if it was for-credit graduate work and the MBA registrar accepts it. Most exec-ed mini programs are non-credit and transfer nothing. Get the credit count in writing before you pay.

Why do business schools use the name?+

Marketing. “Mini-MBA” signals a compressed management survey. It is easier to sell than “four-day leadership program.” The letters are the product. The degree is not.

Will a tuition policy that requires an MBA pay for a mini-MBA?+

Almost never, if the policy names the degree. A professional-development budget might. Those are different buckets.
