AMBA criterion 3.22 is a list, not a mystery. Faculty–student interaction (contact). Group work. Individual reading and preparation. Reflection. The design must make that total achievable in the stated duration, given that part-time and executive students have jobs.
Learning effort is AMBA’s name for total student work in an MBA: contact time, group work, individual reading and preparation, and reflection. The floor is 1,800 hours (criterion 3.22, 2022). Contact hours (500, including 120 synchronous) sit inside that total. A 12-month MBA and a 21-month MBA are supposed to hold the same effort floor.
What is inside the 1,800?

A worked split that meets the minima: 500 contact (120 live, 380 other qualifying contact) plus 800 hours of reading and case prep plus 400 hours of team work outside class plus 100 hours of reflection and assessment equals 1,800. Plenty of U.S. 60-credit programs overshoot this if they honor the federal 45-hour-per-credit convention (60 × 45 = 2,700). Overshooting is allowed. Undershooting and calling it an MBA is the problem.
Shorter than the usual duration range? AMBA wants a rationale and evidence that 1,800 and 500 are still there. Our students are executives so they learn faster is not evidence. A workload map is evidence.
Example: 10-month full-time MBA, 40 working weeks after short breaks. 1,800 divided by 40 equals 45 hours a week of academic work. That is a job. Add a consulting internship on the side and the week does not exist. 21-month full-time MBA, 60 academic weeks plus a summer internship: 1,800 divided by 60 equals 30 hours a week, and the internship sits beside the degree rather than inside the 1,800 unless the school has credited it.

AACSB Standard 5.2 adds a non-hour test: if two deliveries award the same credential, effort and outcomes should be equivalent even when one is online.
Common errors
Treating 1,800 as contact hours. Treating 1,800 as a maximum. Cutting effort in the online section because commuting disappeared. Counting a 40-hour work week at the student’s job toward MBA learning effort. Using credit totals from two unit systems as if they were hours.
FAQ
Is 1,800 hours a year of full-time work?
At 40 hours a week it is 45 weeks. That is why one-year MBAs feel like a job and two-year MBAs feel like a heavy part-time job plus recruiting. AMBA does not lower the floor for the shorter calendar.
Do part-time students still owe 1,800 hours?
Yes, if the school is on AMBA’s MBA criteria. They spread them over 18–36 months. A 30-month program is about 14 hours a week. That is still a third of a job on top of a job.
Can reflection hours be gamed?
They can be padded on a spreadsheet. Peer review teams will look for assessed work, contact logs, and a calendar a human could survive. A reflection diary that no one reads is not 100 hours.
Does AACSB require 1,800 hours?
No. AACSB requires equivalent effort for the same credential, and documented assurance of learning. The 1,800 figure is AMBA’s. Many schools use it as a planning number anyway.
