Two-year MBA
Also called 2-year MBA · 21-month MBA · 20-month MBA
Three jobs share the year: coursework, recruiting, and a tryout job. A typical U.S. structure starts in August. Fall is lockstep or fixed core. Spring adds flexible core and the first electives while internship recruiting peaks. Summer is the internship. Second fall is electives and full-time recruiting. Second spring finishes credits and a capstone. Wharton's catalog version, as one example, requires 19 course units: 9.5 core, then major and electives, over roughly 20 months including a 3.5-month summer internship.
Two-year MBA is a full-time MBA that runs about 20 to 22 months, with a summer in the middle that most U.S. students use for an internship. Year one is core. Year two is electives, majors or concentrations, and a return to campus after the internship. It is the recruiting calendar that employers still treat as default in the United States. It is not a different degree from a one-year MBA at a school that awards both.
Why does the extra year exist?

CSEA career-office surveys still treat “Full-Time MBA, Two year” as its own supported population, separate from part-time, executive, and online. That is an operational fact for how staff time and employer visits are allocated. It is not a quality ranking.
AMBA’s 1,800-hour learning-effort floor is easier to spread across 21 months than across 10. The floor does not rise just because the calendar is longer. A two-year program that pads the second year with light credits is not “more MBA.” It is a slower calendar.
Example: 60 credits, 15 per fall and spring, zero in summer, internship instead. Classroom weeks: about 60. Add two hours of out-of-class work per classroom hour under the U.S. credit-hour convention and you are near the federal 1:2 pattern. The internship is usually not those 60 degree credits. It is a career device sitting in the hole the calendar opened.
How does it differ from one-year?
| Two-year MBA | One-year MBA | |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar | ~20–22 months | ~10–12 months |
| Internship | Built in | Usually absent |
| Weekly academic load | Lower | Higher |
| Career switch | Easier (tryout summer) | Harder without a prior target |
Common errors
Assuming two-year always means more credits. Treating the internship as a degree requirement when it is only a calendar feature. Comparing a two-year full-time placement rate to a one-year program that starts later and recruits on a different clock. Calling a 16-month program two-year because it crosses two calendar years.
FAQ
Is two-year the global standard?
It is the U.S. full-time standard. Many European and Asian full-time MBAs are one year. AMBA does not require two years. It requires learning effort and contact hours.
Do I have to intern?
Most two-year programs expect it and schedule around it. Some students use the summer for a startup, research, or a second language. Career services will still publish internship statistics. Ask whether the internship carries credit.
Can a two-year MBA be part-time?
Not in the usual naming. A 24-month evening MBA is a part-time MBA that happens to last two years. Two-year MBA, in recruiting English, means full-time with an internship summer.
Why do two-year programs cost more?
You pay for more months of tuition and you forgo a second year of salary. Per-credit price may match the one-year version. Total cost of attendance usually does not.
