It can be, at highly competitive programs, because more seats are open across profiles. GMAC notes the edge is larger if you come from an over-represented industry or school. It is not a handicap slot. A 555 GMAT into an M7 R1 is still a 555 GMAT. Lower-ranked programs sometimes stay hungry in later rounds; the R1 bump is smaller there.
Round one (R1) is the first deadline in a typical full-time MBA calendar, usually September or early October for a following-year start. Apply in R1 when the test, essays, and recommendations are done. Do not apply in R1 to “show interest” with a thin file. GMAC’s rule is a complete Round 2 over a rushed Round 1 (gmac.com).

R1 admits get an earlier look at scholarships and more calendar to visit. They also put a deposit down before many Round 2 decisions exist. If you need competing packages, apply to the full list in R1 or accept that you may deposit before School B reports.
Example: 675 GMAT, essays drafted, one recommender traveling until 20 September, R1 due 10 September. Wait for Round 2. A missing letter is not a Round 1 strategy.
Common errors
- Filing R1 with a GMAT sitting still unscheduled
- Treating Consortium’s 15 October date as every school’s R1
- Depositing in January, then trying to unwind it for an R2 offer
- Using R1 as a “practice school” that still sees the same test score later
FAQ
When is MBA Round 1?
For many top U.S. full-time programs, September or October of the year before matriculation. Harvard, Wharton, and Columbia have closed R1 in early September in recent cycles, per GMAC. Always use the school’s current calendar. European intakes follow a different map.
Should internationals always use Round 1?
R1 is the most comfortable visa calendar, but only with a finished file. GMAC and most schools treat Round 2 as still viable for internationals. Round 3 is the round that collides with visa processing. Do not confuse “apply early” with “apply unfinished.”
Does Round 1 include Consortium?
The Consortium runs its own early deadline, 15 October, which some member schools list beside R1. It is not automatically the same as that school’s R1 date. If you apply through The Consortium, follow cgsm.org, not a generic R1 spreadsheet, or the file will miss the release window.
