Round two (R2) is the January deadline for most U.S. full-time MBAs. It is the high-volume round, not the leftovers round. Use it when Round 1 would have meant a weaker test, a missing recommender, or essays that still read like a first draft. GMAC’s line is explicit: a stronger Round 2 beats a weak Round 1 (gmac.com).
Is Round 2 harder than Round 1?

R2 volume is high, which is not the same as “they only take R1 people.” Scholarships still exist. What shrinks is the chance to hold two offers if your R1 schools already took deposits in January while your R2 decisions arrive in March.
Example: R1 GMAT 615, December practice 665. File R2. The extra 50 points on the current 205–805 scale is a class-profile move. Submitting the 615 in September to “make R1” would have been the weaker choice GMAC warns against.
Common errors
- Calling R2 a ding round and rushing a September file
- Saving internationals “for later” and landing in R3
- Applying R2 to one school and R3 to a first choice without a test plan
- Missing that some schools’ R2 is mid-January, not “anytime in winter”
FAQ
When is MBA Round 2?
January for most U.S. full-time programs. Some schools sit in early January, others mid-month. European and one-year programs use different labels. Use the current school calendar, not last year’s spreadsheet. Decision dates often cluster in March.
Should I wait for Round 2 to raise my GMAT?
Yes, if the sitting is the hole and practice tests are moving. GMAC says programs watch averages, and a real score gain is a reason to delay. If practice is flat at 605, waiting until January without a new prep plan just donates three months.
Is Round 2 too late for scholarships?
Usually no. Need-based and many merit processes still run. The aid pool is not as untouched as in R1, and R3 is thinner still. If funding is the constraint, R2 with a finished file beats R1 with a score the scholarship committee will dislike.
