Round three

Also called Round 3 · R3 · MBA third round

It can be, at capacity-constrained full-time programs. By March the class is mostly built, yield from R1 and R2 is visible, and remaining seats are profile-specific. It is not an automatic reject. Schools still admit in R3 to fill holes — a function, a country, a sponsored seat. International applicants who need a visa after an April decision are the group most often told to sit out.

Round three (R3) is the last named deadline in a typical U.S. full-time MBA calendar, usually March or April. Seats and aid are thinner than in R1 or R2. File it only when waiting a year is worse. GMAC still prefers a complete later file to a rushed earlier one (gmac.com; Tuck).

Is Round 3 a ding round?

What R3 actually buys

DepositOften 2–3 weeks laterNon-refundable; overlap with startTuck 2026–27
AidResidualMerit pools already allocatedSchool pages

Tuck’s 2026–27 calendar is a clean example: R3 due 24 March 2027, decision 29 April, non-refundable deposit 14 May. That is three weeks of cash decision, not three months. Round 1 had from December to February.

Example: 665 GMAT in February, essays done, one school still open in R3, visa already in hand as a U.S. worker. File it. Same file, Indian passport, F-1 needed by August: wait for next year’s Round 1. The constraint is the embassy, not the essay.

Common errors

  • Saving an international file for R3 because “there is always a round”
  • Treating R3 as rolling admissions
  • Expecting the Round 1 scholarship grid
  • Depositing in May, then asking to unwind it for a later rolling offer

FAQ

When is MBA Round 3?

Usually March or April for a U.S. full-time start that summer or fall. The school’s own calendar controls. Some programs skip R3 and go waitlist-only. Part-time and online calendars often use rolling or monthly starts instead of a third round.

Should internationals skip Round 3?

Often yes, if an F-1 or equivalent has to be issued after the decision. An April admit plus a May deposit leaves little embassy time. Domestic applicants and already-authorized workers do not have that clock.

Can I apply R1 to some schools and R3 to others?

Yes, but you may have deposited at School A before School B reports. Align calendars if you need competing packages. R3 is a poor comparison round.
