Recruiter assessment

Also called recruiter score · employer reputation · corporate recruiter survey

U.S. News asks each school for recruiter and company-contact names in the summer, then fields the survey in the fall and early winter. Raters score overall program quality from 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding) and may mark "don't know." The published score is a three-year weighted average. Schools with fewer than ten ratings across those three years show N/A and, for the ranking math, receive the lowest value among schools that cleared ten ratings. Thin recruiter lists are therefore a rank risk, not a free pass.

Recruiter assessment is a survey in which corporate recruiters rate MBA programs as hiring sources. In U.S. News it is a 1-to-5 quality score worth 12.5 percent of the formula, averaged over three cycles. In QS the cousin is employer reputation, worth 35 percent. Both are opinion inputs from people who hire.

How is it measured?

U.S. News asks each school for recruiter and company-contact names in the summer, then fields the survey in the fall and early winter. Raters score overall program quality from 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding) and may mark “don’t know.” The published score is a three-year weighted average. Schools with fewer than ten ratings across those three years show N/A and, for the ranking math, receive the lowest value among schools that cleared ten ratings. Thin recruiter lists are therefore a rank risk, not a free pass.

QS does not ask “rate this program 1–5.” The QS Global Employer Survey asks employers which MBA programs they prefer to recruit from. Schools may nominate up to several hundred employers. That nomination volume is why employer reputation can dominate a QS result even when three-month placement is only 5 percent of the formula.

The Financial Times does not run a recruiter quality survey for the Global MBA ranking. Employer-facing signal in that table comes from alumni ratings of the careers service and from the three-month employment rate the school reports.

Example: School M sends 40 consulting firms to U.S. News as contacts. Twenty reply, most of them 4s and 5s, and the three-year pool stays above ten. School N lists eight local banks; six reply. N falls under the ten-rating floor and is assigned the lowest recruiter value in the ranked set. N’s actual hire rate can be fine. The indicator punished sample size.

On-campus recruiting is the operational pipeline those raters use. A recruiter who has not interviewed on a campus in three years is still eligible to score it if the school named them.

How does it differ from peer assessment and from placement rates?

Peer assessment is other academics. Recruiter assessment is employers. A placement rate is a count of seekers who had a job by a date. A recruiter can rate a program “outstanding” while hiring two people from it, or rate it “good” while hiring twenty. QS employer reputation is closer to a popularity vote among nominated employers than to a U.S. News 1–5 mean. Do not convert one into the other.

Common errors

  • Treating a 4.3 recruiter score as a hiring guarantee.
  • Confusing U.S.
  • News recruiter assessment with QS employer reputation.
  • Assuming every on-campus interviewer is in the survey sample.
  • Reading N/A as “recruiters refused to rate us” rather than “fewer than ten ratings.”.

FAQ

How many ratings does a school need?

In U.S. News, ten over three cycles to publish a score. Below that, the ranking engine assigns the lowest observed value. QS does not publish a 1–5 recruiter mean, so there is no equivalent floor.

Can schools pick friendly raters?

They supply names. U.S. News still has to get those people to answer, and “don’t know” is an option. A list of alumni at one firm is a weak panel if they mark don’t-know for schools they do not hire.

Does the FT use recruiter assessment?

Not as a 1–5 program grade. The FT asks alumni how the careers service performed and uses a school-reported three-month employment rate. Different instrument, different weight.

Is recruiter assessment an accreditation review?

No. It is a ranking survey. Accreditation is decided by a recognized accreditor, not by a hiring manager’s 1–5 ballot.
