JD/MBA

Also called J.D./MBA · law and MBA dual degree · Juris Doctor MBA

A four-year pattern is common: 1L year entirely at the law school, a full-time MBA core year, then two mixed years of electives. SMU Cox's four-year outline, as one catalog, puts 30 law credits in year one, a Cox year of 20–22 credits in year two, then mixed years, totaling 75 Dedman credits and 52 Cox credits. Students must follow years one and two as written.

JD/MBA is a dual degree that combines a Juris Doctor with an MBA so both finish in less time than the usual five years sequential (three of law, two of business). Students complete both sets of required courses. A block of credits counts toward both. Most U.S. programs take four years. A few integrated programs take three. Dropping one degree usually unwinds most of the overlap.

How is the calendar built?

A four-year pattern is common: 1L year entirely at the law school, a full-time MBA core year, then two mixed years of electives. Three-year programs compress harder. Penn Carey: 1L year, a joint Law-and-Wharton summer, a Wharton-core second year, a blended third year with a JD/MBA capstone. Columbia publishes 71 law credits and 45 business credits and a semester-by-semester table that starts with 16+15 law and zero business in year one.

UNLV states the arithmetic without the famous brand: 89 JD + 42 MBA if separate; 80 + 30 if dual, because 12 law hours count toward the MBA and nine business hours count toward the JD. Finish both. A student who does not finish the MBA may count only six MBA credits toward the JD.

The ABA still owns the JD. AACSB still owns the business school. Neither accreditation rides for free on the other.

Example: five years sequential, two tuition bills stacked. Four-year dual, one year of tuition and one year of salary saved, still two diplomas. Three-year dual, two years saved, one internship summer often sacrificed, and a lockstep that is unforgiving if you fail a core.

Common errors

Listing 131 credits as if none overlapped. Applying only to the business school. Treating the MBA year as optional electives during 1L (most schools forbid business courses in the first law year). Assuming every Saturday EMBA can be glued onto a JD without a dual-degree agreement.

FAQ

Do I need the LSAT and the GMAT?

Many programs want the LSAT (or GRE) for law and may waive a second test for the MBA once you are in. Northwestern’s JD-MBA is famous for not requiring the LSAT; that is an exception, not a rule. Read both applications.

Is the JD/MBA one diploma?

Usually two. Dual means two credentials. A true joint diploma is rarer. Check what the registrar prints.

Can I start in the MBA instead of 1L?

Some four-year programs allow either order. Three-year integrated programs often fix 1L first. Starting in business can complicate ABA first-year rules.

Why do some JD/MBA students still take five years?

Because they never entered the dual, or they stopped one side, or they wanted a law-firm summer and an MBA internship and refused to give either up. The dual’s saving is optional until you enroll in it.
