A GMAT percentile is the share of comparison-window scores below yours. A 90th percentile means 90 percent of scores in that window were lower. GMAC refreshes the table; the scaled total on your report (205–805, ending in 5) does not move with it (mba.com; GMAC).

Does a 90th percentile last forever?
No. The scaled score is fixed. The percentile is a ranking against a rolling pool. mba.com’s published window for the current exam (2021–2026, n=509,182) puts the mean near 555, 655 near the 90th percentile, and 705 near the 98th. Next year’s table can shift a point or two. Schools that already received your official report can see updated percentiles; your 655 stays 655.

Class-profile medians are scaled scores, not percentiles. A school that prints 675 is not asking for “90th percentile.” Compare your 655 to that 675 on the same 205–805 scale. Do not compare a 10th Edition 700 (ends in 0) to a current 705 (ends in 5) by percentile either, unless both percentiles come from tables built for those editions.
Example: you sent 645 last year. This year’s table lists 645 a point lower than last year’s. Nothing on the file got worse. If the class median is 675, the gap is still 30 scaled points, which is the number that matters for a retake decision.

- Mixing 10th Edition percentiles with current-scale totals
- Retaking because the percentile ticked down one point
- Reading “100th percentile” at 735 as a unique 805

Why did my percentile change when my score did not?
GMAC updates percentile tables against a new comparison window. The scaled score is a measurement on a fixed scale; the percentile is a rank in a crowd that changes. mba.com notes that shifts are usually small. Schools have access to both the original and the updated ranking.
Is a 90th percentile GMAT enough for M7?
It is a strong academic signal, not a ticket. On the current scale, 655 has sat near the 90th percentile in GMAC’s 2021–2026 table. Several M7 class profiles print medians above that. Read the school’s current-scale median and middle 80, then judge the rest of the file.
Do schools see my unofficial percentile screenshot?
They see the official report you send, including the ranking GMAC attaches at send time and later refreshes. A phone photo of the unofficial printout is not a percentile the committee can use. Send the score through mba.com if you want the ranking on the file.
