Acceptance rate

Acceptance rate = admits ÷ complete applications.
Acceptance rate is the number of MBA admits divided by the number of complete applications in the same reporting period. GMAC’s GME Admissions Reporting Standards name this ratio selectivity and give the formula in those words. GMAC’s Application Trends Survey calls the same idea acceptance rate. Do not mix it with yield, which is matriculants divided by admits.
How is acceptance rate calculated?
Acceptance rate = admits ÷ complete applications.
A complete application, under the 2026 standards, contains every required element the school needs to issue a deny: at minimum the form, the fee or a fee waiver, and a transcript or a resume/CV. Started-but-abandoned files do not go in the denominator. Each complete file counts once in the period it was submitted. Withdrawals after the file is complete still stay in the denominator; they are not admits or denies.
GMAC’s worked example: Best University Business School receives 1,020 complete applications to its full-time two-year MBA and admits 470. Selectivity is 470 / 1,020 = 46%. If 30 of those 1,020 people withdrew before a decision, they remain in the 1,020. If the school later pulls 15 people from a waitlist, those 15 are part of the 470, not extra applications.
The Application Trends Survey’s 2025 glossary says acceptance rate is candidates accepted divided by complete applications, “including deferrals from prior admissions cycles.” The Standards document’s selectivity definition does not add that extra clause; it counts offers given during the reporting period. When a school publishes one number, ask which document it followed. Either way, the denominator is complete applications, not website registrations.
How is it different from yield?
Yield is a different page and a different fraction: matriculants (including deferred students who actually start with this class) divided by admits. In GMAC’s example, 250 people matriculate from 470 admits, so yield is 53%. Add 20 deferred students from last year who start now, and yield becomes 57%. None of that changes the 46% acceptance rate. A low acceptance rate is not a quality score. It is a funnel ratio. Read it next to class size and the class profile, not by itself.

Dividing admits by started applications, which inflates selectivity. Treating acceptance rate and yield as synonyms. Dropping waitlist converts to make the rate look tighter. Comparing a round-one snapshot with another school’s full-season figure.
FAQ
Is selectivity the same as acceptance rate?
Yes, in GMAC usage. The Admissions Reporting Standards call the ratio selectivity. The Application Trends Survey calls it acceptance rate. Both divide offers by complete applications. If a school uses a third method (admits divided by all started files), it is not following those documents.
Do incomplete applications count?
No. GMAC is explicit: files that lack required elements needed to deny do not count as complete. A missing recommendation or unpaid fee keeps the file out of the denominator. That is why a school can report far fewer applications than its portal’s “started” tally.
Does a waitlist conversion change the acceptance rate?
The conversion is an admit, so it sits in the numerator. It does not add a second application. A large waitlist that converts late can raise the published rate once the year closes. In-season “we admitted 12%” figures are incomplete if waitlist offers are still coming.
