Test-optional

Test-optional means the MBA program lets you decide whether to put a GMAT, GRE, or EA score in the file, and it will read a score you send. Skip the test only if the rest of the file already shows academic readiness. Optional is not a promise that a blank field is costless (mba.com).

Is test-optional the same as a waiver?+

No. Optional: you choose, no petition. A waiver is permission the school grants to a named applicant against its criteria. Test-free means the school ignores those exams even if they arrive. Harvard Business School and Stanford GSB still require GMAT or GRE for the full-time MBA.

Submit a score when it sits at or above the school’s recent enrolled median, or when it repairs a specific doubt: a non-quant major, a weak GPA, a career switch into finance. Hold it back when it sits well below the published range and the transcript already proves the same skills. There is no MBA “no-harm” rule. If the school says it will read what you send, it will.

Example: engineering 3.8, five years modeling, optional school, GMAT 585. Leave the 585 out. Same school, communications 3.1, no stats, no test: the reader has nothing to hang academic readiness on. Sit the exam or use a published waiver path if you qualify.

• Assuming every M7 is optional because a part-time MBA at the same university is

FAQ

If a school is test-optional, will a low score hurt me?+

If you send it, the school will read it. Optional is a choice about inclusion, not a promise that a weak number is ignored. Below-range scores belong in the drawer unless the rest of the file cannot show academic readiness any other way. Self-reporting “for completeness” is how low scores enter a file that could have stayed clean.

Do HBS and Stanford GSB offer test-optional MBA admission?+

Not for the standard full-time MBA. Both still require GMAT or GRE. Do not import undergraduate SAT-optional language into those applications. A test-optional online or part-time program at another school does not change the HBS or Stanford GSB requirement line.

Will scholarships still look at GMAT or GRE if I skip the test?+

Often yes. Merit-aid processes still use published test medians even when the admission decision can proceed without a score. If funding is part of the plan, treat optional as optional for admission, not automatically optional for scholarships. Ask the aid office whether a score is still collected for merit review.
