Weekend MBA

Also called Saturday MBA · Friday-Saturday MBA · weekend format MBA

Three different products use the word.

Weekend MBA is a part-time MBA that meets on Fridays, Saturdays, or both, so students keep a weekday job. It is a calendar pattern, not automatically an executive MBA. CSEA would usually file it as part-time unless the school has named the program executive. Wharton’s every-other-weekend EMBA is the catalog example of the other product.

What does weekend hide?

Three different products use the word.

A working-professional weekend MBA: Saturday classes, maybe Friday night, students choose electives, people live in the same metro area. CSEA part-time.

An every-other-weekend executive MBA: lockstep cohort, hotel or campus residencies, more years of experience, often employer-sponsored. Wharton’s MBA Program for Executives, as a catalog example, runs alternate Friday/Saturday weekends plus extended sessions and still requires 19 course units, the same total as the full-time MBA. That is executive, reported outside CSEA’s part-time profile.

A hybrid weekend-residency online MBA: most weeks are remote; a few weekends a term everyone flies in. The weekend is a residency, not the whole format.

AMBA still counts contact hours only when they are mandatory, faculty-supported, and in a learning group. A Saturday lecture counts. An optional networking breakfast does not. One-to-one coaching on Sunday morning does not.

Example: Program W meets 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. every other Saturday, two 3-credit courses per term, 12 terms over 24 months, 54 credits. Classroom time is about 7 hours a Saturday. Over 24 meeting days that is roughly 168 scheduled hours before counting weekday group work. Program E (executive) meets Friday afternoon plus Saturday, four times a term, with two week-long residencies. More contact density, more senior peers, same MBA name if the school issues one diploma.

How does it differ from evening MBA?

Evening assumes you can leave the office and reach campus on a weeknight. Weekend assumes you can protect Saturday (and maybe Friday). Commuters from another city usually need weekend or residency. Parents with weekday childcare may prefer Saturday. Neither format reduces AMBA’s 1,800-hour learning-effort floor.

Common errors

Calling every Saturday program an EMBA. Counting travel days as contact hours. Assuming weekend meetings replace weekday preparation. Mixing a Saturday elective taken by a full-time student with a weekend-format degree.

FAQ

Is a weekend MBA easier than a full-time MBA?

The week is different, not thinner, if it is the same degree. AACSB Standard 5.2 expects equivalent rigor. You trade daytime classes for Saturday classes plus a job. AMBA’s 1,800-hour learning-effort floor does not move to Sunday.

Do weekend programs include residencies?

Some do, some do not. Residencies are required in-person blocks. A program can be weekend-only with no overnight stay, or weekend-plus-residency. Read the attendance clause, not the word weekend.

Can I mix evening and weekend sections?

Many evening-and-weekend catalogs allow it. Lockstep cores may not. Switching sections mid-core can break team assignments. Ask whether your core section is a reserved Saturday group.

Why do some weekend MBAs cost more per credit?

Executive pricing, hotel packages, and meals get bundled. A plain Saturday part-time MBA may use the same per-credit rate as the evening program. Compare the fee bill, not the word weekend.
